Casein and caseinates

Is casein halal?

Depends on the source

Depends on how it is made. Acid casein and most caseinates are made without rennet and are halal. Rennet casein carries the rennet question.

Depends on the source means it can be made from plants, microbes or minerals, or from animals, including pigs. From plants, microbes or a halal-slaughtered animal it is halal; from pigs it is not. The label often does not say which, so look for a halal logo, a vegan label or a note on the source, or ask the maker.

What it is and where it comes from

Casein is the main protein in milk. It is separated either with acid (acid casein) or with rennet (rennet casein). Caseinates, such as sodium caseinate, are made from acid casein.

Where you find it

Coffee whiteners, protein powders, processed cheese, sausages, ready meals and baby formula.

What to look for on the label

Sodium and calcium caseinate are usually from acid casein. For protein powders, look for a halal logo.

This is a guide, not a fatwa. Recipes change, so check the label, look for halal certification, and ask your local imam where scholars differ.
