How prayer times are worked out in Belgium
The five prayers are tied to the sun. Fajr begins at dawn, when the first light appears above the horizon, and lasts until sunrise. Dhuhr begins just after the sun has passed its highest point. Asr begins when the shadows have grown long. Maghrib begins at sunset, and Isha when the last light has gone from the sky. Dawn and dusk are measured by how many degrees the sun is below the horizon.
By default this page follows the calendar of the Muslim Executive of Belgium (Exécutif des Musulmans de Belgique, EMB), the body that represents Belgium’s Muslims to the state. Its council of theologians publishes a yearly timetable for Brussels, with minute offsets for other towns: Fajr and Isha at 18°, sunrise about 2 minutes early and Maghrib about 2 minutes after sunset. The Great Mosque of Brussels uses it too.
Belgian mosques do not all pray by one calendar. The Turkish mosques follow Diyanet, with Fajr at 18°, Isha at 16° and its own minutes of caution. Some mosques run by Moroccan communities use Morocco’s 19° / 17°. Many apps use the Muslim World League (18° / 17°), and some French-language sites 12°, the convention common in France. All of these are under “Calculation”. This is the difference in Brussels today:
| Method | Fajr | Maghrib | Isha |
|---|---|---|---|
| EMB, 18° / 18° (default) | 06:29 | 18:36 | 20:24 |
| Diyanet, Turkish mosques | 06:28 | 18:42 | 20:13 |
| 19° / 17° (Morocco) | 06:22 | 18:39 | 20:18 |
| Muslim World League (18° / 17°) | 06:29 | 18:35 | 20:18 |
| 12° / 12° | 07:07 | 18:34 | 19:46 |
From mid-May to late July the sun never sinks 18° below the horizon in Belgium, so there is no full dawn or dusk to measure. The EMB’s theologians then use an estimate they base on latitude 45: in practice Fajr comes about 0.3 of the night before sunrise and Isha about a quarter of the night after sunset, which puts Isha in Brussels close to midnight at the end of June. For that period the EMB allows combining Maghrib and Isha early (jam‘ taqdim) to spare people hardship.
To be honest about it: these times are calculated, not copied from the printed timetable. Outside May to August they match the EMB’s 2026 table to the minute. The summer estimate is not published as a formula, so from May to August Fajr and Isha can differ by a few minutes, in the worst week by up to 13. The EMB’s own timetable is on emb-net.be. If your mosque has its own calendar, follow it.
For Asr you can choose the standard time (Shafi‘i, Maliki and Hanbali schools) or the later Hanafi time. What matters most is that you pray, and that you pray with the people around you.
New to the prayer?
There are five obligatory prayers each day, and each has a set number of rak‘at: Fajr 2, Dhuhr 4, Asr 4, Maghrib 3 and Isha 4. Before you pray, you make wudu, the ritual washing. Whether you have just taken your shahada, have moved to Belgium to study or work, or are starting again from the beginning, these guides start from zero.

Questions about prayer times in Belgium
What time do Muslims pray today in Belgium?
Muslims pray five times a day, and each prayer has its time by the sun: Fajr at dawn, Dhuhr just after midday, Asr in the afternoon, Maghrib at sunset and Isha once it is dark. Today’s times are at the top, and the table gives them for all 37 towns. They move by a few minutes every day and from one town to the next. Genk lies about 180 km east of Ostend, so every prayer there comes about 10 minutes earlier. Tap “Use my location” for the exact time where you are. The prayer times explained
What time is Maghrib (iftar) today?
Maghrib begins at sunset, and in Ramadan it is when you break the fast. The EMB puts it about 2 minutes after sunset. Maghrib hardly depends on the calendar, so it is the surest time of the day. Today’s time for your town is at the top and in the table. Does this break my fast?
Why are the times at my mosque different?
Every calendar starts from the sun, but not all use the same angles for Fajr and Isha. This page follows the EMB, with 18° for both. Turkish mosques follow Diyanet (18° and 16°, with minutes of caution), some Moroccan-run mosques use 19° and 17°, and some French-language sites use 12°. Then Fajr and Isha can be half an hour apart or more, while Maghrib hardly changes. If your mosque publishes its times, on a poster or on Mawaqit, follow them.
Which calendar applies in Belgium: EMB, Diyanet or Morocco?
There is no calendar every Belgian mosque follows. The Muslim Executive of Belgium (EMB), the officially recognised body, publishes one for the whole country, and this page uses it by default. Turkish mosques pray by Diyanet’s calendar, and some Moroccan-run mosques by Morocco’s angles. All of these are recognised ways of fixing dawn and dusk. What matters is that you use one consistently, ideally your mosque’s. You can switch under “Calculation”.
How is Isha worked out in summer?
From mid-May to late July the sun never sinks 18° below the horizon in Belgium, so the last light never fully leaves the sky. The EMB then sets Isha with an estimate, about a quarter of the night after sunset, which puts it close to midnight in Brussels at the end of June. For that period the EMB allows combining Maghrib and Isha early (jam‘ taqdim). Ask your imam what your mosque does.
Until when can I pray Fajr and Isha?
Fajr lasts until sunrise. Isha is best prayed before the middle of the night, halfway between sunset and Fajr, and when there is real need, right up to Fajr. Dhuhr lasts until Asr, Asr until sunset (without putting it off until the sun turns yellow), and Maghrib until Isha. What to do if you miss a prayer
What is the difference between the standard and the Hanafi Asr?
Asr begins when an object’s shadow is as long as the object itself (the standard time, in the Shafi‘i, Maliki and Hanbali schools) or twice as long (Hanafi). So the Hanafi time is later: about half an hour in winter and more than an hour in summer. The calendar shows the earlier time. You can switch to Hanafi under “Calculation”.
Which way is the qibla in Belgium?
The qibla, the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca, is south-east from everywhere in Belgium: around 122° in Ostend, 123° in Brussels and 125° in Liège, measured clockwise from north. Each town page shows the exact angle. Qibla finder How to find the qibla
When is the Friday prayer (Jumu‘ah)?
The Friday prayer takes the place of Dhuhr and begins at Dhuhr time at the earliest. Each mosque sets the time of its sermon (khutbah) itself, often earlier in winter than in summer. Check your mosque’s times. Jumu‘ah explained
When does Ramadan 2027 begin in Belgium?
The expected date is Monday 8 February 2027, by the astronomical calendar. The EMB announces the exact day shortly before, after the moon sighting. Depending on the moon sighting your community follows, it can move by a day. The fast lasts from Fajr to Maghrib, in Brussels about 11 h 32 min on the first day. Your first Ramadan
Can I pray Maghrib and Isha together?
When travelling, most schools allow it. The Hanafi school allows it only at Arafat and Muzdalifah during the pilgrimage. Some scholars also allow it in real hardship, for example when Isha comes very late in summer and you have to work early. Ask your imam what your community does.
