How prayer times are worked out in China
The five prayers are tied to the sun. Fajr begins at dawn, when the first light appears above the horizon, and lasts until sunrise. Dhuhr begins just after the sun has passed its highest point. Asr begins when the shadows have grown long. Maghrib begins at sunset, and Isha when the last light has gone from the sky.
Sunrise, Dhuhr, Asr and Maghrib are worked out without debate. For Fajr and Isha you have to decide how many degrees below the horizon the sun must be, and that is where calendars part ways. China has no single national timetable. By default this page uses the Muslim World League’s 18° for Fajr and 17° for Isha, the default of most apps and sites (IslamicFinder’s for Beijing, for one). Many mosques keep a table of their own, and some add a few minutes of caution. This is the difference in Beijing today:
| Angle | Fajr | Maghrib | Isha |
|---|---|---|---|
| 18° / 17° (default here) | 05:02 | 17:25 | 18:49 |
| 18° / 18° | 05:02 | 17:24 | 18:55 |
| 15° / 15° | 05:18 | 17:24 | 18:39 |
Asr follows the Hanafi school by default (a shadow twice an object’s length), the school most Muslims in China follow; the standard time of the other schools comes earlier and is one tap away. The whole country keeps Beijing time, but the sun rises and sets much later in the west: Dhuhr in Kashgar comes more than two hours after Dhuhr in Beijing, and in June Isha there falls after midnight. The Xinjiang city pages also give Xinjiang time, two hours behind.
If your mosque publishes its times, follow them. What matters most is that you pray, and that you pray with the people around you. Prayer times for Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and Singapore, each on its own local calendar, are on the Chinese version of this page.
New to the prayer?
There are five obligatory prayers each day, and each has a set number of rak‘at: Fajr 2, Dhuhr 4, Asr 4, Maghrib 3 and Isha 4. Before you pray, you make wudu, the ritual washing. Whether you have just taken your shahada, have come to China to study or work, or are starting again from the beginning, these guides start from zero.
Questions about prayer times in China
What time do Muslims pray today in China?
Muslims pray five times a day, and each prayer has its time by the sun: Fajr at dawn, Dhuhr just after midday, Asr in the afternoon, Maghrib at sunset and Isha once it is dark. Today’s times are at the top, and the table gives them for every city. All of China keeps Beijing time, so the times move a lot from east to west: on the same day, Fajr in Kashgar comes more than two hours after Fajr in Beijing. Tap “Use my location” for the exact time where you are. The prayer times explained
Why are the times at my mosque different?
Everyone starts from the sun, but not with the same angle for Fajr and Isha. This page uses the Muslim World League’s 18° for Fajr and 17° for Isha. China has no single national timetable: many mosques keep their own table, used for years, some add a few minutes of caution, and the times on the wall are often the call to prayer or the congregation, a little after the time begins. If your mosque publishes its times, follow them: praying with your community matters more than the exact minute.
Hanafi or standard Asr?
Both are held by scholars; they differ on how long the shadow must be. For the Shafi‘i, Maliki and Hanbali schools Asr begins when an object’s shadow equals its length (plus its noon shadow). For the Hanafi school it is twice its length, so later. Most Muslims in China, Hui and Uyghur alike, follow the Hanafi school, so Hanafi is the default here. Today in Beijing that is 15:42, against 14:58 for the standard time. You can switch under “Calculation”.
What is Xinjiang time?
Every time on these pages is Beijing time, China’s official clock. Many people in Xinjiang also use local Xinjiang time, two hours behind: subtract two hours. Today’s Dhuhr in Kashgar, for example, is 14:41 Beijing time, or 12:41 Xinjiang time. The Xinjiang city pages give both.
When is the Friday prayer (Jumu‘ah)?
The Friday prayer takes the place of Dhuhr and begins at the same time. Each mosque sets the time of its sermon (khutbah) and prayer itself, usually after Dhuhr begins. Check your mosque’s notice. Jumu‘ah explained
Which way is the qibla in China?
The qibla, the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca, is roughly west from everywhere in China: around 279° in Beijing, 256° in Urumqi, 250° in Kashgar and 285° in Guangzhou, measured clockwise from north. Each city page shows the exact angle. Qibla finder How to find the qibla
When does Ramadan 2027 begin? (provisional)
The expected date is Monday 8 February 2027, by the astronomical calendar. It is confirmed the evening before, depending on the sighting of the moon, so it can move by a day. Follow the announcement of your mosque or local Islamic association. Your first Ramadan
How many rak‘at does each prayer have?
Fajr has 2 rak‘at, Dhuhr 4, Asr 4, Maghrib 3 and Isha 4. These are the obligatory prayers. The voluntary (sunnah) prayers come before or after some of them. How many rak‘at each prayer has
Until when can I pray Fajr and Isha?
Fajr lasts until sunrise. Isha is best prayed before the middle of the night, halfway between sunset and Fajr, and when there is real need, right up to Fajr. Dhuhr lasts until Asr, Asr until sunset (without putting it off until the sun turns yellow), and Maghrib until Isha. What to do if you miss a prayer
