How prayer times are worked out in Brazil
The five prayers are tied to the sun. Fajr begins at dawn, when the first light appears above the horizon, and lasts until sunrise. Dhuhr begins just after the sun has passed its highest point. Asr begins when the shadows have grown long. Maghrib begins at sunset, and Isha when the last light has gone from the sky.
Sunrise, Dhuhr, Asr and Maghrib are worked out without debate. For Fajr and Isha you have to decide how many degrees below the horizon the sun must be, and that is where calendars part ways. This page uses 18° for Fajr and 17° for Isha, the Muslim World League method and the most common choice across the Muslim world. These are the angles FAMBRAS (the Federation of Muslim Associations of Brazil) shows on its prayer-times page, and the tables of the Mesquita Brasil in São Paulo and the mosque in Foz do Iguaçu match them to the minute. The page adds a minute of margin to Dhuhr and Maghrib. At 15°, Fajr comes later and Isha earlier. This is the difference in São Paulo today:
| Angle | Fajr | Maghrib | Isha |
|---|---|---|---|
| 18° / 17° (default here) | 04:08 | 18:16 | 19:29 |
| 15° / 15° | 04:22 | 18:15 | 19:20 |
Brazil is in the southern hemisphere, so summer runs from December to March: that is when Fajr is earliest, Isha latest and the days longest in the South. Near the equator, in Macapá or Belém, the times barely change all year. No special rule is needed anywhere in the country: the night is always long enough for the sun to reach 18°. Each city shows the local time of its own time zone. For Asr you can choose the standard time (Shafi‘i, Maliki and Hanbali schools) or the later Hanafi time.
If your mosque publishes its times, follow them. What matters most is that you pray, and that you pray with the people around you.
New to the prayer?
There are five obligatory prayers each day, and each has a set number of rak‘at: Fajr 2, Dhuhr 4, Asr 4, Maghrib 3 and Isha 4. Before you pray, you make wudu, the ritual washing. Whether you have just taken your shahada, have moved to Brazil to study or work, or are starting again from the beginning, these guides start from zero. They are also in Portuguese.
Questions about prayer times in Brazil
What time do Muslims pray today in Brazil?
Muslims pray five times a day, and each prayer has its time by the sun: Fajr at dawn, Dhuhr just after midday, Asr in the afternoon, Maghrib at sunset and Isha once it is dark. Today’s times are at the top, and the table gives them for every city, each in its local time. They move by a few minutes every day and from one city to the next. Tap “Use my location” for the exact time where you are. The prayer times explained
What time is Fajr today?
Today’s Fajr is at the top of this page. Fajr begins with the first light of dawn and lasts until sunrise. In the South and Southeast it comes before 4:00 at the end of the year and after 5:00 in June and July. Near the equator, in Belém, Manaus or Fortaleza, it hardly moves all year. How to pray Fajr
Why are the times at my mosque different?
Everyone starts from the sun, but not everyone uses the same angle for Fajr and Isha, and some mosques add a few minutes of margin. This page uses 18° for Fajr and 17° for Isha, the angles on the prayer-times page of FAMBRAS (the Federation of Muslim Associations of Brazil) and in the tables of several Brazilian mosques, so the difference is usually a minute or two. Shia mosques follow their own calendar (the Ja‘fari method), with Maghrib some 15 to 20 minutes after sunset; this page does not calculate it. If your mosque publishes its times, follow them: praying with your community matters more than the exact minute.
18° or 15°: which angle should I use?
Both are defended by scholars. 18° for Fajr is the most common across the Muslim world and in Brazil. 15° gives a Fajr 12 to 17 minutes later and an Isha about 10 minutes earlier. Many people pray Fajr with their mosque but stop eating earlier in Ramadan, to be safe. You can change the method under “Calculation”.
What is Hanafi Asr?
Asr begins when an object’s shadow equals its length, plus its shadow at noon: that is the time of the Shafi‘i, Maliki and Hanbali schools, which most Muslims in Brazil follow. In the Hanafi school Asr begins when the shadow is twice the length, so later: today in São Paulo, 66 minutes later. If you follow the Hanafi school, pick “Hanafi” under “Calculation”.
Why do the times differ so much between states?
For two reasons. Brazil is huge, and the sun rises much earlier on the northeast coast than in Acre. And it has four time zones: most of the country is on Brasília time, but Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Rondônia, Roraima and most of Amazonas are an hour behind, and Acre two. Each city here shows its local time. There is no daylight saving time, which Brazil dropped in 2019.
Which way is the qibla in Brazil?
The qibla, the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca, is east-northeast from everywhere in Brazil: around 66° in Recife, 69° in São Paulo, 69° in Manaus and 72° in Porto Alegre, measured clockwise from north. Each city page shows the exact angle. Qibla finder How to find the qibla
When is the Friday prayer (Jumu‘ah)?
The Friday prayer takes the place of Dhuhr, but each mosque sets the time of its sermon (khutbah) itself. It is usually at Dhuhr time or a little after. Check your mosque’s times. Jumu‘ah explained
When does Ramadan 2027 begin in Brazil?
The expected date is Monday 8 February 2027, by the Umm al-Qura calendar. It is confirmed the evening before, depending on the sighting of the moon, so it can move by a day. In Brazil Ramadan 2027 falls in summer, so the fasts are long in the South and shorter near the equator. Follow the announcement your mosque follows. Ramadan 2027 timetable for Brazil Your first Ramadan
How many rak‘at does each prayer have?
Fajr has 2 rak‘at, Dhuhr 4, Asr 4, Maghrib 3 and Isha 4. These are the obligatory prayers. The voluntary (sunnah) prayers come before or after some of them. How many rak‘at each prayer has
