How the fasting times are worked out

The fast lasts from Fajr, when the first light appears in the morning, until Maghrib, just after sunset. Before Fajr you eat sahur, and at Maghrib you break the fast with iftar. After Isha many people pray tarawih, the extra night prayers of Ramadan.

The times use 18° below the horizon for Fajr and 17° for Isha, the most common angles in the Muslim world and the ones FAMBRAS shows on its prayer-times page. Maghrib is a minute after sunset. At 15°, sahur in São Paulo ends about 14 minutes later. If your mosque publishes its own calendar, follow it.

In Brazil Ramadan 2027 falls in high summer, so the fast is longest in the South. On the first day it lasts 14 h 47 min in Porto Alegre, 14 h 22 min in São Paulo and 13 h 26 min in Manaus. Through the month the days shorten in the South and Southeast: by the last day the fast in Porto Alegre is down to 13 h 52 min. Near the equator it stays almost the same all month.

Each city is shown in its local time. Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Rondônia, Roraima and most of Amazonas are an hour behind Brasília, and Acre two: in Rio Branco iftar on the first day is at 18:01, local time. Brazil has had no daylight saving time since 2019, so no time jumps during the month.

After Ramadan: zakat al-fitr and Eid

Before the Eid prayer, everyone who can afford it gives zakat al-fitr, a small gift of food for each person in the household. It is not the same as zakat on savings, which you can work out with the zakat calculator. Eid al-Fitr is expected on Tuesday 9 March 2027, or a day later if Ramadan runs to 30 days: Eid al-Fitr 2027.

Questions about fasting in Ramadan

When does Ramadan 2027 start in Brazil?

By the Umm al-Qura calendar, Monday 8 February 2027 is the first day of fasting. It is confirmed the evening before, depending on the sighting of the moon, so it can move by a day. In Brazil, FAMBRAS and other Islamic bodies announce the start, and each mosque announces the date it follows. Ramadan lasts 29 or 30 days, and Eid al-Fitr is expected on Tuesday 9 March 2027. When do I have to stop eating for sahur?

Sahur is the meal before dawn. You can eat and drink right up until Fajr begins. The time in the "Sahur ends" column is the last moment, not the time to start eating. Many people get up half an hour earlier so they have time for a calm meal.

When is iftar in São Paulo?

Iftar is at Maghrib, when the sun has set. In São Paulo it is at 18:52 on the first day and 18:30 on the last day. It is sunnah to break the fast with a date and water before the Maghrib prayer.

How long is the fast in Brazil in Ramadan 2027?

It depends on where you are. Ramadan falls in summer, so the fasts are longest in the South: on the first day 14 h 47 min in Porto Alegre and 14 h 22 min in São Paulo, against 13 h 26 min in Manaus. In the South and Southeast the fast gets about 1 min shorter each day; in São Paulo it comes to about 407 hours over the month.

Are the times in Brasília time?

Each city is shown in its local time. For most of the country that is Brasília time. Manaus, Cuiabá, Campo Grande, Porto Velho and Boa Vista are an hour behind, and Rio Branco two: there the first sahur ends at 04:18 and iftar is at 18:01, local time.

Why are the times a little different from my mosque?

Mosques and apps do not all use the same angle for Fajr and Isha. These times use 18° for Fajr and 17° for Isha, the angles on the prayer-times page of FAMBRAS (the Federation of Muslim Associations of Brazil), with Maghrib a minute after sunset. At 15°, sahur in São Paulo ends about 14 minutes later, and some calendars add an imsak 10 minutes before Fajr as a margin. Shia mosques follow their own calendar, with a later Maghrib. If your mosque publishes a Ramadan calendar, follow it.

Does a shower break the fast?

No. Showering, bathing and swimming do not break the fast, as long as you do not swallow water. Take care when you rinse your mouth and nose. Brushing your teeth is fine too, without swallowing. The checker answers more than 50 everyday questions like these, with where the four schools differ. Does this break my fast?

What is zakat al-fitr, and is it the same as zakat?

Zakat al-fitr is a small gift of food, or its value, that every Muslim who can afford it gives for each person in the household before the Eid prayer, so people in need can celebrate too. Mosques in Brazil announce the amount each year: the value of about 2.5 to 3 kilos of a staple food such as rice or flour. It is different from zakat, the yearly 2.5% on savings above the nisab. Who does not have to fast?

Anyone who is ill, travelling, menstruating or bleeding after childbirth should not fast, and pregnant and breastfeeding women may leave it if they worry about themselves or the baby. Children do not fast before puberty. The missed days are made up later in the year. Someone who will never be able to fast, for example because of old age or a lasting illness, gives fidya instead: food for a person in need for each day. Ask your imam if this applies to you.

I am a new Muslim. How do I get ready for my first Ramadan?

Start small: practise getting up for sahur a few days before, and learn the niyyah, the intention to fast. You do not need to know everything on day one. The guide below covers what matters most. Your first Ramadan
