How prayer times are worked out in Spain
The five prayers are tied to the sun. Fajr begins at dawn, when the first light appears above the horizon, and lasts until sunrise. Dhuhr begins just after the sun has passed its highest point. Asr begins when the shadows have grown long. Maghrib begins at sunset, and Isha when the last light has gone from the sky.
Sunrise, Dhuhr, Asr and Maghrib are worked out without debate. For Fajr and Isha you have to decide how many degrees below the horizon the sun must be, and that is where calendars part ways. Spain has no single calendar that every mosque follows. By default this page uses 18° for Fajr and 17° for Isha: the most widespread choice across the Muslim world, what sites such as IslamicFinder use for Spain, and very close to the 18° table of the main mosque in Granada. Many mosques run by Moroccan communities follow Morocco’s official calendar instead: 19° for Fajr, a few minutes earlier, and five minutes of margin on Dhuhr and Maghrib. This is the difference in Madrid today:
| Angle | Fajr | Maghrib | Isha |
|---|---|---|---|
| 18° / 17° (default here) | 07:03 | 19:24 | 20:49 |
| 19° / 17° (Moroccan calendar) | 06:58 | 19:28 | 20:49 |
| 15° / 15° | 07:19 | 19:23 | 20:39 |
Spain keeps Central European time although it lies further west, so the clock runs ahead of the sun: in summer Dhuhr comes around 14:00 in Catalonia and around 14:40 in Galicia, and Isha in June is after 23:00. The Canary Islands are an hour behind the mainland, and the Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife pages use Canary time. For Asr you can choose the standard time (Shafi‘i, Maliki and Hanbali schools) or the later Hanafi time.
If your mosque publishes its times, follow them: many are on Mawaqit. What matters most is that you pray, and that you pray with the people around you.
New to the prayer?
There are five obligatory prayers each day, and each has a set number of rak‘at: Fajr 2, Dhuhr 4, Asr 4, Maghrib 3 and Isha 4. Before you pray, you make wudu, the ritual washing. Whether you have just taken your shahada, have moved to Spain to study or work, or are starting again from the beginning, these guides start from zero.

Questions about prayer times in Spain
What time do Muslims pray today in Spain?
Muslims pray five times a day, and each prayer has its time by the sun: Fajr at dawn, Dhuhr just after midday, Asr in the afternoon, Maghrib at sunset and Isha once it is dark. Today’s times are at the top, and the table gives them for every city. They move by a few minutes every day and from one city to the next: on the same date Fajr comes more than half an hour earlier in Girona than in Huelva. Tap “Use my location” for the exact time where you are. The prayer times explained
What time is Fajr today?
Today’s Fajr is at the top of this page. Fajr begins with the first light of dawn and lasts until sunrise. In Spain it comes late on the clock in winter, after 6:30 almost everywhere, and very early in June, around 4:00 in the north. How to pray Fajr
What time do I break my fast (Maghrib)?
The fast ends at sunset, at Maghrib. Maghrib does not depend on the angle you choose, so it is the surest time of the day: every method agrees to the minute, apart from the few minutes of margin some calendars add, such as Morocco’s. Does this break my fast?
Why are the times at my mosque different?
Everyone starts from the sun, but not with the same angle for Fajr and Isha. This page uses 18° for Fajr and 17° for Isha. Many mosques run by Moroccan communities follow Morocco’s calendar, with Fajr at 19°, a few minutes earlier, and five minutes of margin on Dhuhr and Maghrib. Others use their own table. If your mosque publishes its times, on a poster or on Mawaqit, follow them: praying with your community matters more than the exact minute.
18°, 19° or 15°: which angle should I use?
All three are defended by scholars. 18° for Fajr is the most common across the Muslim world. 19° is the angle of Morocco’s official calendar and gives a Fajr a few minutes earlier. 15° gives a later Fajr and an earlier Isha. Many people pray Fajr with their mosque but stop eating earlier in Ramadan, to be safe. You can change the method under “Calculation”.
Until when can I pray Fajr and Isha?
Fajr lasts until sunrise. Isha is best prayed before the middle of the night, halfway between sunset and Fajr, and when there is real need, right up to Fajr. Dhuhr lasts until Asr, Asr until sunset (without putting it off until the sun turns yellow), and Maghrib until Isha. What to do if you miss a prayer
How is Isha worked out in summer?
Isha begins when the last light has left the sky, with the sun 17° below the horizon. In June the sun takes a long time to sink that far, and Spain keeps Central European time although it lies further west, so the clock runs ahead of the sun. That is why summer Isha comes around 23:30 in the south and around midnight or later in Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque Country. No special rule is needed: even in June the night is long enough.
Which way is the qibla in Spain?
The qibla, the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca, is east from everywhere in Spain: around 99° in Seville, 104° in Madrid and 111° in Barcelona, measured clockwise from north. In the Canary Islands it is a little north of east, around 85°. Each city page shows the exact angle. Qibla finder How to find the qibla
When is the Friday prayer (Jumu‘ah)?
The Friday prayer takes the place of Dhuhr, but each mosque sets the time of its sermon (khutbah) itself. It is usually at Dhuhr time or a little after, and some large mosques hold two. Check your mosque’s times. Jumu‘ah explained
When does Ramadan 2027 begin in Spain?
The expected date is Monday 8 February 2027, by the astronomical calendar. It is confirmed the evening before, depending on the sighting of the moon, so it can move by a day. Follow the announcement your mosque follows. Your first Ramadan
How many rak‘at does each prayer have?
Fajr has 2 rak‘at, Dhuhr 4, Asr 4, Maghrib 3 and Isha 4. These are the obligatory prayers. The voluntary (sunnah) prayers come before or after some of them. How many rak‘at each prayer has
What is imsak?
The fast begins at Fajr. Imsak is a margin of caution before Fajr, often 10 minutes, so you finish eating in time. Many calendars show it, but it is not an obligation. If you follow 18°, some advise stopping eating at the 19° time, which comes earlier.
Can I pray Maghrib and Isha together?
When travelling, yes, according to the great majority of scholars. Outside travel, many allow it in real hardship, for example when Isha comes very late on summer nights. It is not a habit for the rest of the year: ask the imam at your mosque.
