How prayer times are worked out in Kuwait
The five prayers are tied to the sun. Fajr begins at dawn, when the first light appears above the horizon, and lasts until sunrise. Dhuhr begins just after the sun has passed its highest point. Asr begins when the shadows have grown long. Maghrib begins at sunset, and Isha when the last light has gone from the sky. Dawn and dusk are measured by how many degrees the sun is below the horizon.
By default this page follows the prayer times the Kuwait Meteorological Department publishes for Kuwait City on met.gov.kw. Fajr begins when the sun is 18° below the horizon and Isha when it is 17.5° below. Maghrib is at sunset.
Under “Calculation” you can compare it with Umm al-Qura, Saudi Arabia’s calendar, where Isha comes 90 minutes after Maghrib, and the Muslim World League (18° / 17°), which many international apps use. This is the difference in Kuwait City today:
| Method | Fajr | Maghrib | Isha |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kuwait, 18° / 17.5° (default) | 04:35 | 17:10 | 18:27 |
| Umm al-Qura (Saudi Arabia) | 04:33 | 17:11 | 18:41 |
| Muslim World League (18° / 17°) | 04:35 | 17:11 | 18:25 |
To be honest about it: these times are calculated, not copied from the department’s table. Checked against its Kuwait City times on 13 dates in every season of 2025 and 2026, every time is within a minute. The other towns here are worked out for their own position, at most a few minutes apart. If your mosque shows other times, follow them.
For Asr you can choose the standard time (Shafi‘i, Maliki and Hanbali schools) or the later Hanafi time. What matters most is that you pray, and that you pray with the people around you.
New to the prayer?
There are five obligatory prayers each day, and each has a set number of rak‘at: Fajr 2, Dhuhr 4, Asr 4, Maghrib 3 and Isha 4. Before you pray, you make wudu, the ritual washing. Whether you have just taken your shahada, have moved to Kuwait to study or work, or are starting again from the beginning, these guides start from zero.

Questions about prayer times in Kuwait
What time do Muslims pray today in Kuwait?
Muslims pray five times a day, and each prayer has its time by the sun: Fajr at dawn, Dhuhr just after midday, Asr in the afternoon, Maghrib at sunset and Isha once it is dark. Today’s times are at the top, and the table gives them for all 11 towns. They move by a few minutes every day and from one town to the next. Jahra lies about 30 km west of Kuwait City, so every prayer there comes about a minute later. Tap “Use my location” for the exact time where you are. The prayer times explained
What time is Maghrib (iftar) today?
Maghrib begins at sunset, and in Ramadan it is when you break the fast. Maghrib hardly depends on the calendar, so it is the surest time of the day. Today’s time for your city is at the top and in the table. Does this break my fast?
Why are the times at my mosque different?
This page follows the Meteorological Department’s times within a minute. Each mosque then waits a set time before the iqamah, when the congregation stands for prayer, so ask or check the board at your mosque. Apps set to another method, such as the Muslim World League or Umm al-Qura, can show Fajr and Isha several minutes apart.
Which prayer timetable applies in Kuwait?
The Kuwait Meteorological Department publishes the prayer times for Kuwait City on met.gov.kw, and this page works them out the same way. Umm al-Qura, Saudi Arabia’s calendar, and the Muslim World League are under “Calculation” for comparison. If your mosque shows other times, follow them.
How is Isha worked out in Kuwait?
Isha begins when the last light has left the sky. Kuwait’s times put that at the sun 17.5° below the horizon: about 75 to 95 minutes after Maghrib, depending on the season.
Until when can I pray Fajr and Isha?
Fajr lasts until sunrise. Isha is best prayed before the middle of the night, halfway between sunset and Fajr, and when there is real need, right up to Fajr. Dhuhr lasts until Asr, Asr until sunset (without putting it off until the sun turns yellow), and Maghrib until Isha. What to do if you miss a prayer
What is the difference between the standard and the Hanafi Asr?
Asr begins when an object’s shadow is as long as the object itself (the standard time, in the Shafi‘i, Maliki and Hanbali schools) or twice as long (Hanafi). So the Hanafi time is later: about half an hour in winter and more than an hour in summer. The calendar shows the earlier time. You can switch to Hanafi under “Calculation”.
Which way is the qibla in Kuwait?
The qibla, the direction of the Kaaba in Makkah, is southwest from everywhere in Kuwait: around 225° in Kuwait City and 227° in Al Wafra, measured clockwise from north. Each town page shows the exact angle. Qibla finder How to find the qibla
When is the Friday prayer (Jumu‘ah)?
The Friday prayer takes the place of Dhuhr and begins at Dhuhr time at the earliest. Each mosque sets the time of its sermon (khutbah) itself, often earlier in winter than in summer. Check your mosque’s times. Jumu‘ah explained
When does Ramadan 2027 begin in Kuwait?
The expected date is Monday 8 February 2027, by the astronomical calendar. Kuwait’s Sharia moon-sighting authority announces the start after looking for the moon on the evening of the 29th of Sha‘ban. Depending on the moon sighting your community follows, it can move by a day. The fast lasts from Fajr to Maghrib, in Kuwait City about 12 h 20 min on the first day. Ramadan 2027 timetable Your first Ramadan
Can I pray Maghrib and Isha together?
When travelling, most schools allow it. The Hanafi school allows it only at Arafat and Muzdalifah during the pilgrimage. Some scholars also allow it in real hardship, for example when Isha comes very late in summer and you have to work early. Ask your imam what your community does.
