How the fasting times are worked out

The fast lasts from Fajr, when the first light appears in the morning, until Maghrib, just after sunset. Before Fajr you eat sahur, and at Maghrib you break the fast with iftar. After Isha many people pray tarawih, the extra night prayers of Ramadan.

The times are worked out at 12° below the horizon for both Fajr and Isha, the convention most French mosques follow, and Maghrib is at sunset. Calendars at 15° or 18° give an earlier imsak: on the first day in Paris, Fajr is 07:00 at 12°, 18 minutes earlier at 15° and 36 minutes earlier at 18°. Many people who follow 12° still stop eating a little earlier, to be safe. If your mosque publishes its own calendar, follow it.

France spans a wide stretch from east to west in one time zone, so the clock times move more than the fast itself. On the first day iftar is at 17:38 in Strasbourg and 18:28 in Brest, but both fasts last about 10 h 59 min. Clocks change to summer time on 28 March 2027, after Ramadan.

After Ramadan: zakat al-fitr and Eid

Before the Eid prayer, everyone who can afford it gives zakat al-fitr, a small gift of food for each person in the household. It is not the same as zakat on savings, which you can work out with the zakat calculator. Eid al-Fitr is expected on Tuesday 9 March 2027, or a day later if Ramadan runs to 30 days: Eid al-Fitr 2027.

Questions about fasting in Ramadan

When does Ramadan 2027 start in France?

By the Umm al-Qura calendar, Monday 8 February 2027 is the first day of fasting. In France it is confirmed the evening before, on the Night of Doubt (Nuit du doute), so it can move by a day. Ramadan lasts 29 or 30 days, and Eid al-Fitr is expected on Tuesday 9 March 2027. Eid al-Fitr 2027

When do I have to stop eating for sahur?

Sahur is the meal before dawn. You can eat and drink right up until Fajr begins. The time in the "Sahur ends" column is the last moment, not the time to start eating. Many people get up half an hour earlier so they have time for a calm meal.

When is iftar in Paris?

Iftar is at Maghrib, when the sun has set. In Paris it is at 17:59 on the first day and 18:45 on the last day. It is sunnah to break the fast with a date and water before the Maghrib prayer.

How long is the fast in France in Ramadan 2027?

Ramadan falls in February and March, so the fasts are short compared with a summer Ramadan. In Paris the fast lasts 10 h 59 min on the first day and 12 h 34 min on the last day, about 341 hours over the month.

Why are the times a little different from my mosque?

Mosques and apps use different angles for Fajr and Isha. These times use 12°, the most common in France. In Paris, 15° puts imsak 18 minutes earlier and 18° 36 minutes earlier, and some calendars add an imsak 10 minutes before Fajr as a margin. Many mosques announce their own times, often on Mawaqit. If yours does, follow it.

Does a shower break the fast?

No. Showering, bathing and swimming do not break the fast, as long as you do not swallow water. Take care when you rinse your mouth and nose. Brushing your teeth is fine too, without swallowing. The checker answers more than 50 everyday questions like these, with where the four schools differ. Does this break my fast?

What is zakat al-fitr, and is it the same as zakat?

Zakat al-fitr is a small gift of food, or its value, that every Muslim who can afford it gives for each person in the household before the Eid prayer, so people in need can celebrate too. Mosques and Muslim bodies in France announce the amount each year: the value of about 2.5 to 3 kilos of a staple food such as rice or flour. It is different from zakat, the yearly 2.5% on savings above the nisab. Zakat calculator

Who does not have to fast?

Anyone who is ill, travelling, menstruating or bleeding after childbirth should not fast, and pregnant and breastfeeding women may leave it if they worry about themselves or the baby. Children do not fast before puberty. The missed days are made up later in the year. Someone who will never be able to fast, for example because of old age or a lasting illness, gives fidya instead: food for a person in need for each day. Ask your imam if this applies to you.

I am a new Muslim. How do I get ready for my first Ramadan?

Start small: practise getting up for sahur a few days before, and learn the niyyah, the intention to fast. You do not need to know everything on day one. The guide below covers what matters most. Your first Ramadan
