This counter keeps count so your heart can stay with the words. Pick the dhikr after prayer and it walks you through SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah and Allahu Akbar, moving on by itself when each set is done. Or count Astaghfirullah, the salawat on the Prophet (peace be upon him), La ilaha illAllah, or anything you like, with a target of 33, 99, 100, your own number, or none.
How to do tasbih after prayer
After the salam, the sunnah is to stay seated for a few minutes of remembrance. This is the order taught after the obligatory prayers:
- Astaghfirullah, three times. Right after the salam, ask Allah to forgive whatever fell short in your prayer.
- Allahumma antas-salam. Say it once: "Allahumma antas-salam wa minkas-salam, tabarakta ya dhal-jalali wal-ikram".
- SubhanAllah, 33 times. Glory be to Allah.
- Alhamdulillah, 33 times. All praise is due to Allah.
- Allahu Akbar, 33 times. Allah is the Greatest. That makes 99.
- Complete the hundred. Say the tahlil once: "La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir". Or say Allahu Akbar a 34th time instead.
Many also recite Ayatul Kursi after each obligatory prayer. For every word in Arabic with its meaning, read the full guide to dhikr after prayer. New to these words? Start with Islamic phrases for new Muslims.
How to use the counter
- Tap anywhere on the big circle. On a computer, press Space or Enter.
- Your phone gives a short pulse on each tap and a longer one when you reach the target, where the browser supports it.
- Undo takes back one count. Reset asks for a second tap, so you never lose a count by accident.
- Turn on Keep screen on, if your browser offers it, so your phone does not lock while you count.
Common questions
What is tasbih?
Tasbih means glorifying Allah, most of all by saying "SubhanAllah" (Glory be to Allah). The word is also used for dhikr in general, and for the string of prayer beads many Muslims use to keep count.
What do SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah and Allahu Akbar mean?
SubhanAllah means "Glory be to Allah": Allah is far above every flaw. Alhamdulillah means "All praise is due to Allah": you thank Him for everything. Allahu Akbar means "Allah is the Greatest": greater than anything you can think of. La ilaha illAllah means "There is no god but Allah". Astaghfirullah means "I seek forgiveness from Allah".
Is Allahu Akbar said 33 or 34 times after prayer?
Both are authentic, and both are in Sahih Muslim. In one narration you say SubhanAllah 33, Alhamdulillah 33 and Allahu Akbar 34. In another you say each 33 times and complete the hundred with "La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah...". Choose either one in the counter.
Can I count dhikr on my fingers?
Yes, and it is the sunnah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was seen counting tasbih on his right hand, and he said the fingers will be asked and made to speak on the Day of Judgement. Each finger has three joints, so one hand counts to 15.
Is a digital tasbih counter allowed?
Most scholars see a counter, like prayer beads, as a tool to keep count, and allow it. Counting on the fingers of your right hand is the sunnah and is better when you can. Use the counter when it helps you focus, for example for a large number.
How many times should I say Astaghfirullah?
After each prayer, three times. Through the day there is no limit. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said he asked Allah for forgiveness more than seventy times a day, and in another narration a hundred times.
Do I have to do the dhikr after every prayer?
No. It is sunnah, not obligatory, and your prayer is complete without it. If 33 of each feels like a lot at first, start with fewer and build up. A little every time is better than a lot once.
Does the counter keep my count?
Yes. Your count and your choice of dhikr stay on this device, in your browser, even if you close the page. Nothing is sent anywhere.
