How prayer times are worked out in South Korea
The five prayers are tied to the sun. Fajr begins at dawn, when the first light appears above the horizon, and lasts until sunrise. Dhuhr begins just after the sun has passed its highest point. Asr begins when the shadows have grown long. Maghrib begins at sunset, and Isha when the last light has gone from the sky.
Sunrise, Dhuhr, Asr and Maghrib are worked out without debate. For Fajr and Isha you have to decide how many degrees below the horizon the sun must be, and that is where calendars part ways. The Korea Muslim Federation publishes its Seoul timetable on the Muslim World League method, 18° for Fajr and 17° for Isha, and this page uses the same by default. You can also choose 18° for both, which many mosques of the Bangladeshi and Pakistani communities use, or 15° / 15°, the default of some apps. This is the difference in Seoul today:
| Method | Fajr | Maghrib | Isha |
|---|---|---|---|
| 18° / 17° (default, as the KMF) | 05:20 | 17:46 | 19:07 |
| 18° / 18° (Karachi) | 05:20 | 17:45 | 19:12 |
| 15° / 15° (ISNA) | 05:35 | 17:45 | 18:57 |
Korea Standard Time is set for 135° east, so the clock runs about half an hour ahead of the sun and Dhuhr begins after 12:00. There is no daylight saving time: the same clock all year. For Asr you can choose the standard time (Shafi‘i, Maliki and Hanbali schools) or the later Hanafi time. This page adds a minute of margin to Dhuhr and Maghrib.
If your mosque publishes its times, follow them. What matters most is that you pray, and that you pray with the people around you. The KMF lists its mosques across the country, from Busan and Jeonju to Ansan, Paju and Gimhae, at koreaislam.org.
New to the prayer?
There are five obligatory prayers each day, and each has a set number of rak‘at: Fajr 2, Dhuhr 4, Asr 4, Maghrib 3 and Isha 4. Before you pray, you make wudu, the ritual washing. Whether you have just taken your shahada, have come to Korea to study or work, or are starting again from the beginning, these guides start from zero.

Questions about prayer times in South Korea
What time do Muslims pray today in South Korea?
Muslims pray five times a day, and each prayer has its time by the sun: Fajr at dawn, Dhuhr just after midday, Asr in the afternoon, Maghrib at sunset and Isha once it is dark. Today’s times are at the top, and the table gives them for every city. They move by a minute or two every day and from one city to the next. Tap “Use my location” for the exact time where you are. The prayer times explained
Are these the same times as the Korea Muslim Federation’s timetable?
Yes, the same method. The Korea Muslim Federation (KMF), which runs the Seoul Central Mosque in Itaewon, publishes a yearly Seoul timetable on the Muslim World League method (Fajr 18°, Isha 17°) with no adjustments. This page uses the same method by default. Checked day by day against the KMF timetable for February 2026 to January 2027, every time is within 2 minutes. The KMF timetable is for Seoul and Gyeonggi; for other cities, open the city here.
Why are the times at my mosque different?
Sunrise, Dhuhr, Asr and Maghrib are plain astronomy, and timetables differ on them only by a minute or two of margin. Fajr and Isha depend on the angle a timetable uses for dawn and dusk. Many mosques run by Bangladeshi and Pakistani communities use 18° for both (the Karachi method) with Hanafi Asr, and some add a few minutes of caution. If your mosque publishes its times, follow them: praying with your community matters more than the exact minute.
What is Hanafi Asr?
Asr begins when shadows grow long. The Shafi‘i, Maliki and Hanbali schools take the moment a shadow has grown by the length of the object, the Hanafi school the moment it has grown by twice that. In Korea the Hanafi time comes about 40 minutes to an hour and a quarter later. Many Muslims from South and Central Asia follow the Hanafi school. You can switch under “Calculation”.
Why does Dhuhr start after 12:00 in Korea?
Korea Standard Time is set for 135° east, but Seoul lies near 127° east, so the clock runs about half an hour ahead of the sun. The sun reaches its highest point between about 12:15 and 12:45, and Dhuhr begins just after. Busan, further east, is several minutes earlier than Seoul. Korea has no daylight saving time, so the times never jump by an hour.
How much do the times change between summer and winter?
A lot. Around midsummer, Fajr in Seoul is at about 03:16 and Isha at about 21:43. Around midwinter, Fajr is at about 06:09 and Isha at about 18:46. Korea lies between 33° and 38° north, so even in June the night is long enough and no special rule is needed.
Until when can I pray Fajr and Isha?
Fajr lasts until sunrise. Isha is best prayed before the middle of the night, halfway between sunset and Fajr, and when there is real need, right up to Fajr. Dhuhr lasts until Asr, Asr until sunset (without putting it off until the sun turns yellow), and Maghrib until Isha. What to do if you miss a prayer
Which way is the qibla in South Korea?
The qibla, the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca, is west-north-west from everywhere in Korea: around 286° in Seoul, 287° in Busan and 286° on Jeju, measured clockwise from north. The KMF gives 285° for the whole country. Each city page shows the exact angle. Qibla finder How to find the qibla
When is the Friday prayer (Jumu‘ah)?
The Friday prayer takes the place of Dhuhr, and each mosque sets the time of its sermon (khutbah). The KMF’s 2026 timetable says the Friday khutbah at the Seoul Central Mosque starts at 1:00 p.m. For other mosques, ask the mosque. Jumu‘ah explained
When does Ramadan 2027 begin in Korea?
The expected date is Monday 8 February 2027, by the astronomical calendar. It is confirmed the evening before, depending on the sighting of the moon, so it can move by a day. Follow the announcement your mosque follows. Your first Ramadan
How many rak‘at does each prayer have?
Fajr has 2 rak‘at, Dhuhr 4, Asr 4, Maghrib 3 and Isha 4. These are the obligatory prayers. The voluntary (sunnah) prayers come before or after some of them. How many rak‘at each prayer has
Can I combine prayers at work?
When travelling, joining Dhuhr with Asr and Maghrib with Isha is allowed by the great majority of scholars. Outside travel, many allow it in real hardship, such as a factory shift with no break, but not as a habit. Often a short break is enough: a prayer takes a few minutes. Ask the imam at your mosque about your situation. Praying at work or school
