How prayer times are worked out in Austria
The five prayers are tied to the sun. Fajr begins at dawn, when the first light appears above the horizon, and lasts until sunrise. Dhuhr begins just after the sun has passed its highest point. Asr begins when the shadows have grown long. Maghrib begins at sunset, and Isha when the last light has gone from the sky. Dawn and dusk are measured by how many degrees the sun is below the horizon.
By default this page follows the single calendar of the Islamic Religious Community in Austria (IGGÖ), in use since 1 January 2023. Its tables are Diyanet’s to the minute, so IGGÖ communities and the Turkish mosques of ATIB pray at the same times. Its calendar follows the 2021 Istanbul prayer-times congress: Fajr at 18°, Isha at 16°, and a few minutes of caution. Sunrise is shown 7 minutes early, Dhuhr 5, Asr 4 and Maghrib 7 minutes after the astronomical moment.
Under “Calculation” you can pick two alternatives. The Muslim World League (MWL) uses 18° for Fajr and 17° for Isha with hardly any margins, like many international apps. With 15° / 15° Fajr comes later and Isha earlier. None of them is the only correct one. If you are used to an app from another country, this is often why its times look different. This is the difference in Vienna today:
| Method | Fajr | Maghrib | Isha |
|---|---|---|---|
| IGGÖ and Diyanet (default) | 05:41 | 17:59 | 19:24 |
| Muslim World League (18° / 17°) | 05:41 | 17:52 | 19:29 |
| 15° / 15° | 06:00 | 17:51 | 19:17 |
In summer the night in Austria is not dark enough for the full angles. From about May to August the calendar sets Fajr and Isha with an estimate (takdir) based on the length of the night, so at the end of June Isha in Vienna begins around 22:30 instead of around 23:30. The IGGÖ notes that on such days Maghrib and Isha may be combined.
To be honest about it: these times are calculated, not copied from the printed calendar. From September to April they match the IGGÖ’s tables to the minute. The summer estimate is not published in every detail, so from May to August Fajr and Isha can differ by a few minutes, in Vienna by 8 at most. The original calendar is on derislam.at. If your mosque has its own calendar, follow it.
For Asr you can choose the standard time (Shafi‘i, Maliki and Hanbali schools) or the later Hanafi time. What matters most is that you pray, and that you pray with the people around you.
New to the prayer?
There are five obligatory prayers each day, and each has a set number of rak‘at: Fajr 2, Dhuhr 4, Asr 4, Maghrib 3 and Isha 4. Before you pray, you make wudu, the ritual washing. Whether you have just taken your shahada, have moved to Austria to study or work, or are starting again from the beginning, these guides start from zero.

Questions about prayer times in Austria
What time do Muslims pray today in Austria?
Muslims pray five times a day, and each prayer has its time by the sun: Fajr at dawn, Dhuhr just after midday, Asr in the afternoon, Maghrib at sunset and Isha once it is dark. Today’s times are at the top, and the table gives them for all 35 towns. They move by a few minutes every day and from one town to the next. Vienna lies almost 500 km east of Bregenz, so every prayer there comes about 25 minutes earlier. Tap “Use my location” for the exact time where you are. The prayer times explained
What time is Maghrib (iftar) today?
Maghrib begins just after sunset, and in Ramadan it is when you break the fast. The calendar puts Maghrib seven minutes after the actual sunset, as a margin of caution. Today’s time for your town is at the top and in the table. Does this break my fast?
Why are the times at my mosque different?
Every calendar starts from the sun, but not all use the same angles for Fajr and Isha or the same minutes of caution. The IGGÖ has published one calendar for all of Austria since 2023, and it is identical to Diyanet’s, which ATIB’s mosques follow. This page reproduces it. Other mosques and many international apps use the Muslim World League’s angles (18° and 17°) or 15°, and then Fajr and Isha can be 20 minutes or more apart. If your mosque publishes its times, follow them.
Which calendar applies in Austria: IGGÖ, ATIB or Diyanet?
Since 1 January 2023 they are the same times. The IGGÖ moved its calendar to the decisions of the 2021 Istanbul prayer-times congress, which Diyanet’s calendar, followed by ATIB, is also built on. The IGGÖ recommends that all communities in a town use the same times so nobody is confused. If your community uses the Muslim World League (MWL) or 15°, you can pick them under “Calculation”.
How is Isha worked out in summer?
In summer the sun in Austria barely sinks more than 18° to 20° below the horizon at night, and twilight lasts through half the night. The IGGÖ calendar then sets Isha and Fajr with an estimate (takdir) based on the length of the night, so at the end of June Isha in Vienna begins around 22:30. The IGGÖ notes that on such days Maghrib and Isha may be combined.
Until when can I pray Fajr and Isha?
Fajr lasts until sunrise. Isha is best prayed before the middle of the night, halfway between sunset and Fajr, and when there is real need, right up to Fajr. Dhuhr lasts until Asr, Asr until sunset (without putting it off until the sun turns yellow), and Maghrib until Isha. What to do if you miss a prayer
What is the difference between the standard and the Hanafi Asr?
Asr begins when an object’s shadow is as long as the object itself (the standard time, in the Shafi‘i, Maliki and Hanbali schools) or twice as long (Hanafi). So the Hanafi time is later: about half an hour in winter and more than an hour in summer. The calendar shows the earlier time. You can switch to Hanafi under “Calculation”.
Which way is the qibla in Austria?
The qibla, the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca, is south-east from everywhere in Austria: around 127° in Bregenz, 129° in Innsbruck and 137° in Vienna, measured clockwise from north. Each town page shows the exact angle. Qibla finder How to find the qibla
When is the Friday prayer (Jumu‘ah)?
The Friday prayer takes the place of Dhuhr and begins at Dhuhr time at the earliest. Each mosque sets the time of its sermon (khutbah) itself, often earlier in winter than in summer. Check your mosque’s times. Jumu‘ah explained
When does Ramadan 2027 begin in Austria?
The expected date is Monday 8 February 2027, by the astronomical calendar. The IGGÖ announces the exact day shortly before. Depending on the moon sighting your community follows, it can move by a day. The fast lasts from Fajr to Maghrib, in Vienna about 11 h 43 min on the first day. Your first Ramadan
Can I pray Maghrib and Isha together?
When travelling, most schools allow it. The Hanafi school allows it only at Arafat and Muzdalifah during the pilgrimage. Some scholars also allow it in real hardship, for example when Isha comes very late in summer and you have to work early. Ask your imam what your community does.
