How prayer times are worked out in Sweden
The five prayers are tied to the sun. Fajr begins at dawn, when the first light appears above the horizon, and lasts until sunrise. Dhuhr begins once the sun has passed its highest point. Asr begins when the shadows have grown long. Maghrib begins just after sunset, and Isha when the last light has gone from the sky.
Dawn and dusk are measured by how many degrees the sun is below the horizon. By default this page follows the Diyanet calendar, based on the international prayer-times conference in Istanbul: Fajr at 18°, Isha at 16° and a few minutes of safety margin. Sunrise is shown 7 minutes earlier, and Dhuhr 5, Asr 4 and Maghrib 7 minutes later, than the astronomical moment. These are the tables Islamiska förbundet i Sverige publishes. Others, such as islam.nu, follow the Muslim World League’s angles, 18° and 17°. You can pick either under “Calculation”, or 15° / 15°.
Sweden is still a hard place to work out prayer times. At midsummer the sun at midnight is only 11° below the horizon in Malmö, 7° in Stockholm and under 3° in Umeå. In Stockholm it does not reach 18° from late April to mid-August, so it never gets properly dark. The calendar therefore uses smaller angles in summer. This page does it like this: the Fajr angle is at most 69% and the Isha angle at most 64% of how deep the sun goes at midnight, and around midsummer Fajr comes no later than when 22% of the night is left before sunrise, and Isha no earlier than when 19.6% of the night has passed after sunset. With the other methods, the rule for light nights takes over: Fajr never comes earlier than the angle divided by 60 of the night before sunrise (18° gives 18/60), and Isha never later than the same after sunset. Under “Calculation” you can pick one seventh of the night or the middle of the night instead.
In the far north come the midnight sun and the polar night. When the sun does not set or does not rise, when the day is shorter than three hours or the night shorter than one, there is no sunset or sunrise to count from. The page then works out the times for the nearest latitude to the south where it can, in steps of half a degree, but with the town’s own midday. In Kiruna that is roughly from late May to mid-July and from early December to mid-January, and in Luleå only for a week around midsummer. The page tells you on the days it applies.
To be honest about it: the times here are calculated, not copied from a printed table. From September to March they match the tables of Diyanet and Islamiska förbundet for Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö to the minute. The summer rule is not published, so from April to August Fajr and Isha can differ by a few minutes, at most around 6. In the north of Sweden, Diyanet’s tables also make the summer day itself shorter, by about an hour in Umeå and over two in Kiruna, while this page shows the real sunrise and sunset. If your mosque has a table of its own, follow it. What matters most is that you pray, and that you pray together with the people around you.
New to the prayer?
There are five obligatory prayers each day, and each has a set number of rak‘at: Fajr 2, Dhuhr 4, Asr 4, Maghrib 3 and Isha 4. Before you pray, you make wudu, the ritual washing. Whether you have just taken your shahada, moved here to study or work, or are finding your way back after a break, these guides start from zero.

Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around 8 Feb. In Stockholm the fast from Fajr to Maghrib is then about 11 h 6 min on the first day, and each town page shows how long it is there. Read Your first Ramadan, or check what breaks the fast.
Questions about prayer times in Sweden
What are the prayer times in Sweden today?
The times at the top of this page are for today, and the table lists every town. Prayer times follow the sun, so they move by a few minutes every day and differ from town to town: in June, Fajr in Umeå comes almost an hour and a half earlier than in Malmö. Tap “Use my location” for the times exactly where you are.
Why do apps and mosques show different times?
They all start from the sun, but they use different angles for Fajr and Isha and different safety margins. The Diyanet calendar, which Islamiska förbundet publishes, puts Fajr at 18° and Isha at 16° below the horizon. The Muslim World League (MWL), which islam.nu and many international apps follow, uses 18° and 17°. In summer each calendar also has its own rule for the light nights, and then the gap can be half an hour or more.
Which method does this page use?
By default the Diyanet calendar: 18° for Fajr, 16° for Isha and a few minutes of safety margin, the same tables Islamiska förbundet i Sverige publishes. In summer the calendar uses smaller angles, and during the midnight sun and the polar night the times follow the nearest latitude where day and night can be told apart. Under “Calculation” you can switch to the Muslim World League or 15° / 15°.
What do I do in summer, when Isha comes late?
In June and July Isha comes late and Fajr early. Many people pray Maghrib and Isha together in this period, because scholars have allowed it in times of real hardship, and some mosques pray Isha shortly after Maghrib in the lightest weeks. Ask the imam at your mosque what they follow.
How do you pray during the midnight sun and the polar night?
When the sun does not set, or does not rise, there is no sunset or sunrise to count from. The most common answer is to follow the times of the nearest latitude where day and night can still be told apart, but with the town’s own midday. That is what this page does, and it tells you on the days it applies, in Kiruna and Gällivare for example.
What is the difference between standard and Hanafi Asr?
Asr begins when the shadow of an object is as long as the object itself (standard, used by the Shafi‘i, Maliki and Hanbali schools) or twice as long (Hanafi). The Hanafi time is therefore later: in Stockholm by just over 20 minutes in winter and by more than an hour in summer. The Diyanet calendar shows the earlier time.
When does the time for each prayer end?
Fajr lasts until sunrise. Dhuhr lasts until Asr. Asr lasts until sunset, but should not be put off until the sun turns yellow. Maghrib lasts until Isha. Isha should be prayed before midnight, halfway between sunset and Fajr, and when there is real need it can be prayed right up to Fajr. What to do if you miss a prayer
Which way is the qibla in Sweden?
The qibla, the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca, is south-east from everywhere in Sweden: around 139° in Malmö and Gothenburg, 148° in Stockholm and up to 157° in Luleå, measured clockwise from north. Each town page shows the exact angle. How to find the qibla
