How the fasting times are worked out

The fast lasts from Fajr, when the first light appears, until Maghrib, just after sunset. Before Fajr you eat sahur, and at Maghrib you break the fast with iftar. After Isha come the tarawih prayers.

The times follow the timetable of the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs (Awqaf). Fajr begins when the sun is about 18° below the horizon. Isha is set by the clock: 90 minutes after Maghrib, in Ramadan as the rest of the year. Checked against the ministry’s Doha table for 2027, Ramadan included: every time within a minute.

In February and March the days are short, so the fast lasts about 12 h 30 min in Doha on the first day and 13 h 7 min on the last. Iftar on the first day is at 17:25 in Al Khor and 17:28 in Dukhan. You may eat and drink until Fajr. Many imsakiyat print an imsak time about 10 minutes before Fajr as a margin, so you finish in good time; the fast itself begins at Fajr.

After Ramadan: zakat al-fitr and Eid

Before the Eid prayer, everyone who can afford it gives zakat al-fitr, a small gift of food for each person in the household. It is not the same as zakat on savings, which you can work out with the zakat calculator. Eid al-Fitr is expected on Tuesday 9 March 2027, or a day later if Ramadan runs to 30 days: Eid al-Fitr 2027.
