How prayer times are worked out in Germany
The five prayers are tied to the sun. Fajr begins at dawn, when the first light appears above the horizon, and lasts until sunrise. Dhuhr begins once the sun has passed its highest point. Asr begins when the shadows have grown long. Maghrib begins just after sunset, and Isha when the last light has gone from the sky.
Dawn and dusk are measured by how many degrees the sun is below the horizon. By default this page works like the calendar that DITIB and IGMG, the two largest mosque associations, have published together since 1 January 2023, based on the method of Diyanet, Turkey’s religious authority: Fajr at 18°, Isha at 16°, plus a few minutes of safety margin. Sunrise is shown 7 minutes earlier than the astronomical moment, Dhuhr 5, Asr 4 and Maghrib 7 minutes later. Many mosques in Germany follow this calendar.
Under “Calculation” you will find two alternatives. The Muslim World League (MWL) uses 18° for Fajr and 17° for Isha with hardly any safety minutes, as many international apps do. With 15° / 15°, Fajr comes later and Isha earlier. None of these is the only right one. If you have brought an app with you from another country, that is often why its times look different.
In summer, especially in the north of Germany, the nights never get properly dark. At the end of June the sun at midnight is only just over 12° below the horizon in Kiel, 13° in Hamburg and 14° in Berlin, so Fajr at 18° and Isha at 16° simply do not happen. From around April to August the Diyanet calendar therefore uses smaller angles, set by how deep the sun goes at midnight. With MWL and 15°, the rule for light nights takes over instead, and you can choose it under “Calculation” too.
To be honest about it: the times here are calculated, not copied from the printed calendar. From September to March they usually match the Diyanet calendar to the minute. Diyanet does not publish its exact summer rule, so from April to August Fajr and Isha can differ by a few minutes in some cities, usually 3 to 10. If your mosque has a calendar, follow it. What matters most is that you pray, and that you pray together with the people around you.
New to the prayer?
There are five obligatory prayers each day, and each has a set number of rak‘at: Fajr 2, Dhuhr 4, Asr 4, Maghrib 3 and Isha 4. Before you pray, you make wudu, the ritual washing. Whether you have just taken your shahada, are here to study or work, or are finding your way back after a break, these guides start from zero.

Questions about prayer times in Germany
What are the prayer times in Germany today?
The times at the top of this page are for today, and the table lists all 84 cities. Prayer times follow the sun, so they move by a few minutes every day and differ from city to city: in June, Fajr in Kiel comes almost half an hour earlier than in Freiburg. Tap “Use my location” for the times exactly where you are.
When is Maghrib, the time to break the fast, today?
Maghrib begins just after sunset, and in Ramadan it is when you break your fast. The Diyanet calendar puts Maghrib seven minutes after the actual sunset as a safety margin. Today’s time for your city is at the top and in the table.
Why are the times at my mosque different?
Every calendar starts from the sun, but not every calendar uses the same angles for Fajr and Isha or the same safety minutes. Since 1 January 2023, DITIB and IGMG have published one joint calendar based on Diyanet, and this page follows it. Other mosques and many international apps use the Muslim World League’s angles (18° and 17°) or 15°, and then Fajr and Isha can easily be 20 minutes or more apart. If your mosque has a calendar, follow it.
Which method is right: Diyanet, IGMG or MWL?
There is no single right method. All three are recognised ways of fixing dawn and dusk, and scholars chose them for good reasons. What matters is that you use one method consistently, ideally the one your community uses. Since 2023 the DITIB and IGMG calendars are the same, both based on Diyanet. You can choose the Muslim World League (MWL) or 15° under “Calculation”.
How is Isha worked out in summer, when it never gets dark?
At the end of June the sun at midnight is only just over 12° below the horizon in Kiel, 13° in Hamburg and 14° in Berlin. The full angles for Fajr and Isha are never reached, so it never gets fully dark. The Diyanet calendar therefore uses smaller angles in summer, and Isha in Kiel at the end of June begins at around 23:15. With the other methods, the rule for light nights takes over, and you can set it under “Calculation”.
Until when can I pray Fajr and Isha?
The time for Fajr ends at sunrise. The Diyanet calendar shows sunrise seven minutes earlier than the astronomical sunrise, to keep you on the safe side. Isha should be prayed before Islamic midnight, halfway between sunset and Fajr. When there is real need, Isha can be prayed right up to Fajr. What to do if you miss a prayer
What is the difference between standard and Hanafi Asr?
Asr begins when the shadow of an object is as long as the object itself (standard, used by the Shafi‘i, Maliki and Hanbali schools) or twice as long (Hanafi). The Hanafi time is therefore later: in Berlin by around half an hour in winter and by more than an hour in summer. The Diyanet calendar shows the earlier time. You can switch to Hanafi under “Calculation”.
Which way is the qibla in Germany?
The qibla, the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca, is south-east from everywhere in Germany: around 125° in Aachen, Saarbrücken and Freiburg, and 137° in Berlin and Cottbus, measured clockwise from north. Each city page shows the exact angle. How to find the qibla
When is the Friday prayer (Jumu‘ah)?
The Friday prayer takes the place of Dhuhr and begins at the earliest at Dhuhr time. Each mosque sets the time of its khutbah, often earlier in winter than in summer. Ask at your mosque or check its notice board. Jumu‘ah explained
When does Ramadan 2027 begin in Germany?
Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin on Monday 8 February 2027. The mosque associations announce the exact day shortly before, in Germany usually together through the Coordination Council of Muslims (KRM). Depending on the moon sighting, your community may begin a day earlier or later. The fast lasts from Fajr to Maghrib, in Berlin about 11 h 30 min on the first day. Your first Ramadan Does this break my fast?
Can I pray Maghrib and Isha together?
When travelling, most schools of law allow Maghrib and Isha to be joined. The Hanafi school only allows it at Arafat and Muzdalifah during the pilgrimage. Some scholars also allow it in real hardship, for example when Isha comes very late in summer and you have to be at work early. Ask your imam what your community does.
