How prayer times are worked out in France

The five prayers are tied to the sun. Fajr begins at dawn, when the first light appears above the horizon, and lasts until sunrise. Dhuhr begins just after the sun has passed its highest point. Asr begins when the shadows have grown long. Maghrib begins at sunset, and Isha when the last light has gone from the sky.

Sunrise, Dhuhr, Asr and Maghrib are worked out without debate. For Fajr and Isha you have to decide how many degrees below the horizon the sun must be, and that is where calendars part ways. By default this page uses 12° for both Fajr and Isha (the convention known as UOIF, now Musulmans de France), as most mosques and French websites do. It gives a later Fajr and an earlier Isha. Some scholars and mosques prefer 15° or 18°, which put dawn earlier, especially for the start of the fast. This is the difference in Paris today:

AngleFajrIsha
12° / 12° (default here)07:1419:55
15° / 15°06:5620:13
18° / 17° (Muslim World League)06:3720:25
18° / 16° (Diyanet calendar)06:3720:21

Turkish mosques in France often follow the Diyanet calendar, which adds a few minutes of margin to Dhuhr, Asr and Maghrib. Other mosques add their own margin of caution. All these methods are offered under “Calculation”, in the tool.

In June, in the northern half of the country, the nights are so short that Isha and Fajr come very close together. A rule for light nights then divides the night for Fajr and Isha, as on most French calendars, and the tool tells you when it applies. For Asr you can choose the standard time (Shafi‘i, Maliki and Hanbali schools) or the later Hanafi time.

If your mosque publishes its times, follow them: many are on Mawaqit. What matters most is that you pray, and that you pray with the people around you.

New to the prayer?

There are five obligatory prayers each day, and each has a set number of rak‘at: Fajr 2, Dhuhr 4, Asr 4, Maghrib 3 and Isha 4. Before you pray, you make wudu, the ritual washing. Whether you have just taken your shahada, have come to France to study or work, or are starting again from the beginning, these guides start from zero.

Questions about prayer times in France

What time is Fajr today in France?

Today’s Fajr is at the top of this page, and the table gives it for every city. Fajr moves by a few minutes every day and from one city to the next: on the same date it comes almost 50 minutes earlier in Strasbourg than in Brest. Tap “Use my location” for the exact time where you are. Fajr lasts until sunrise. How to pray Fajr

What time is Isha tonight?

Isha begins when the last light has left the sky. With the 12° used here, that is a little over an hour after sunset in autumn and winter, and much later in summer, up to almost midnight in the north in June. Tonight’s time is in the tool at the top of the page.

What time do I break my fast (Maghrib)?

The fast ends at sunset, at Maghrib. Maghrib does not depend on the angle you choose, so it is the surest time of the day: every method agrees to the minute, apart from the few minutes of margin some calendars add. Does this break my fast?

Why are the times at my mosque different?

Everyone starts from the sun, but not with the same angle for Fajr and Isha. Most mosques in France use 12°, others 15° or 18°, and the gap can be more than half an hour in the morning. Some also add a few minutes of caution. If your mosque publishes its times, on a poster or on Mawaqit, follow them: praying with your community matters more than the exact minute.

12°, 15° or 18°: which angle should I use?

All three are defended by scholars. 12° (the convention known as UOIF, now Musulmans de France) is the most widespread in France and gives a later Fajr and an earlier Isha. 18° is the most common in the rest of the Muslim world and gives an earlier Fajr. 15° sits in between. Many people pray Fajr with their mosque but stop eating earlier in Ramadan, to be safe. You can change the method under “Calculation”.

Until when can I pray Fajr and Isha?

Fajr lasts until sunrise. Isha is best prayed before the middle of the night, halfway between sunset and Fajr, and when there is real need, right up to Fajr. Dhuhr lasts until Asr, Asr until sunset (without putting it off until the sun turns yellow), and Maghrib until Isha. What to do if you miss a prayer

How do I pray Isha in summer, when it is still light?

In June, in the northern half of France, the night is so short that Isha falls around midnight and Fajr a little after 4:00. A rule for light nights then divides the night, so there is always real time between Isha and Fajr. The tool tells you on the days it applies. In those weeks some mosques also pray Maghrib and Isha together.

Which way is the qibla in France?

The qibla, the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca, is east-south-east from everywhere in France: around 110° in Pau, 119° in Paris and 125° in Strasbourg, measured clockwise from north. Each city page shows the exact angle. How to find the qibla

When is the Friday prayer (Jumu‘ah)?

The Friday prayer takes the place of Dhuhr, but each mosque sets the time of its sermon (khutbah) itself. It often begins between 12:30 and 2 pm, and some large mosques hold two. Check your mosque’s times. Jumu‘ah explained

When does Ramadan 2027 begin in France?

The expected date is Monday 8 February 2027, by the astronomical calendar. The date is confirmed the evening before, on the Night of Doubt, depending on the sighting of the moon, so it can move by a day. Follow the announcement your mosque follows. Your first Ramadan

What is imsak?

The fast begins at Fajr. Imsak is a margin of caution before Fajr, often 10 minutes, so you finish eating in time. Many calendars show it, but it is not an obligation. If you follow 12°, some advise stopping eating at the 15° or 18° time, which comes earlier.

Can I pray Maghrib and Isha together?

When travelling, yes, according to the great majority of scholars. Outside travel, many allow it in real hardship, for example when Isha comes very late on summer nights, and some mosques do it in June. It is not a habit for the rest of the year: ask the imam at your mosque.
