How prayer times are worked out in Saudi Arabia
The five prayers are tied to the sun. Fajr begins at dawn, when the first light appears above the horizon, and lasts until sunrise. Dhuhr begins just after the sun has passed its highest point. Asr begins when the shadows have grown long. Maghrib begins at sunset, and Isha when the last light has gone from the sky. Dawn and dusk are measured by how many degrees the sun is below the horizon.
By default this page follows Umm al-Qura, Saudi Arabia’s official calendar, which the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology publishes on ummulqura.org.sa. Fajr begins when the sun is 18.5° below the horizon. Isha is not set by an angle: it begins 90 minutes after Maghrib, and 120 minutes after Maghrib in Ramadan.
Under “Calculation” you can compare it with the Muslim World League (MWL), 18° for Fajr and 17° for Isha, which many international apps use. In Saudi Arabia the mosques call the adhan by Umm al-Qura, so that is the time to follow. This is the difference in Riyadh today:
| Method | Fajr | Maghrib | Isha |
|---|---|---|---|
| Umm al-Qura (default) | 04:36 | 17:20 | 18:50 |
| Muslim World League (18° / 17°) | 04:39 | 17:21 | 18:32 |
To be honest about it: these times are calculated, not copied from the official table. Checked against the Umm al-Qura tables for Riyadh, Jeddah, Makkah, Dammam and Arar for every day of 2027, they are within a minute, Fajr within two. The official times are on ummulqura.org.sa.
For Asr you can choose the standard time (Shafi‘i, Maliki and Hanbali schools) or the later Hanafi time. What matters most is that you pray, and that you pray with the people around you.
New to the prayer?
There are five obligatory prayers each day, and each has a set number of rak‘at: Fajr 2, Dhuhr 4, Asr 4, Maghrib 3 and Isha 4. Before you pray, you make wudu, the ritual washing. Whether you have just taken your shahada, have moved to Saudi Arabia to study or work, or are starting again from the beginning, these guides start from zero.

Questions about prayer times in Saudi Arabia
What time do Muslims pray today in Saudi Arabia?
Muslims pray five times a day, and each prayer has its time by the sun: Fajr at dawn, Dhuhr just after midday, Asr in the afternoon, Maghrib at sunset and Isha once it is dark. Today’s times are at the top, and the table gives them for all 23 towns. They move by a few minutes every day and from one town to the next. Dammam lies more than 1,000 km east of Jeddah, so every prayer there comes about 45 minutes earlier. Tap “Use my location” for the exact time where you are. The prayer times explained
What time is Maghrib (iftar) today?
Maghrib begins at sunset, and in Ramadan it is when you break the fast. Maghrib hardly depends on the calendar, so it is the surest time of the day. Today’s time for your city is at the top and in the table. Does this break my fast?
Why are the times at my mosque different?
Saudi mosques call the adhan by the Umm al-Qura calendar, and this page follows it within a minute. Each mosque then waits a set time before the iqamah, when the congregation stands for prayer, so ask or check the board at your mosque. Apps set to another method, such as the Muslim World League, can show Fajr and Isha several minutes or more apart.
Which calendar applies in Saudi Arabia?
Umm al-Qura is the kingdom’s official calendar, for the prayer times as well as the Hijri date. Mosques call the adhan by it, and this page follows it by default. The Muslim World League is under “Calculation” for comparison.
Why is Isha 90 minutes after Maghrib?
The Umm al-Qura calendar does not measure Isha by the sun’s angle. It sets Isha 90 minutes after Maghrib all year, and 120 minutes after Maghrib in Ramadan. Fajr is measured by the sun, at 18.5° below the horizon.
Until when can I pray Fajr and Isha?
Fajr lasts until sunrise. Isha is best prayed before the middle of the night, halfway between sunset and Fajr, and when there is real need, right up to Fajr. Dhuhr lasts until Asr, Asr until sunset (without putting it off until the sun turns yellow), and Maghrib until Isha. What to do if you miss a prayer
What is the difference between the standard and the Hanafi Asr?
Asr begins when an object’s shadow is as long as the object itself (the standard time, in the Shafi‘i, Maliki and Hanbali schools) or twice as long (Hanafi). So the Hanafi time is later: about half an hour in winter and more than an hour in summer. The calendar shows the earlier time. You can switch to Hanafi under “Calculation”.
Which way is the qibla in Saudi Arabia?
The qibla, the direction of the Kaaba in Makkah, depends on where you are in the kingdom: around 244° in Riyadh, 97° in Jeddah and 156° in Tabuk, measured clockwise from north. Each city page shows the exact angle. Qibla finder How to find the qibla
When is the Friday prayer (Jumu‘ah)?
The Friday prayer takes the place of Dhuhr and begins at Dhuhr time at the earliest. Each mosque sets the time of its sermon (khutbah) itself, often earlier in winter than in summer. Check your mosque’s times. Jumu‘ah explained
When does Ramadan 2027 begin in Saudi Arabia?
The expected date is Monday 8 February 2027, by the astronomical calendar. The Supreme Court announces the start after the moon is sighted on the evening of the 29th of Sha‘ban. Depending on the moon sighting your community follows, it can move by a day. The fast lasts from Fajr to Maghrib, in Riyadh about 12 h 32 min on the first day. Ramadan 2027 timetable Your first Ramadan
Can I pray Maghrib and Isha together?
When travelling, most schools allow it. The Hanafi school allows it only at Arafat and Muzdalifah during the pilgrimage. Some scholars also allow it in real hardship, for example when Isha comes very late in summer and you have to work early. Ask your imam what your community does.
