Why prayer times differ in the Netherlands
The five prayers are tied to the sun. Fajr begins at dawn, when the first light appears, and lasts until sunrise. Dhuhr begins just after the sun has passed its highest point. Asr begins when the shadows have grown long. Maghrib begins at sunset, and Isha when the last light has gone from the sky.
Sunrise, Dhuhr, Asr and Maghrib are simple astronomy. For Fajr and Isha a calendar has to decide how far below the horizon the sun must be, and the Netherlands has no single calendar that every mosque follows. By default this page uses Diyanet’s calendar, which the Turkish mosque organisations (the ISN and Milli Görüş) publish for Dutch towns, and which this site also uses for Germany: 18° for Fajr, 16° for Isha, and a few minutes of caution on sunrise, Dhuhr, Asr and Maghrib (Maghrib comes 7 minutes after sunset). Many mosques run by Moroccan communities use 18° / 17° instead, often on a Mawaqit screen, or a table of their own. You can switch under “Calculation”.
Summer is where calendars part ways most. In Amsterdam, from 19 May to 25 Jul, the sun never gets 18° below the horizon, so the sky never becomes fully dark and every calendar needs a rule for those nights. This is Amsterdam today and on the shortest night of the year:
| Method | Today | 21 Jun 2027 | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fajr | Isha | Fajr | Isha | |
| Diyanet (default here) | 06:25 | 20:11 | 03:49 | 23:26 |
| 18° / 17°, angle-based | 06:26 | 20:16 | 03:08 | 00:09 |
| 15° / 15° | 06:45 | 20:03 | 03:30 | 23:54 |
For Asr you can choose the standard time (the one Diyanet’s calendar prints, and the Shafi‘i, Maliki and Hanbali reckoning) or the later Hanafi time, when shadows are twice an object’s length. If your mosque publishes its times, follow them. What matters most is that you pray, and that you pray with the people around you.
When each prayer begins and ends
Each prayer has a window. It begins at its time and stays valid until the next prayer, with two exceptions people often ask about: Fajr ends at sunrise, not at Dhuhr, and Isha is best prayed before the middle of the night. Today in Amsterdam:
| Prayer | Begins | Time runs out |
|---|---|---|
| Fajr | 06:25 | 08:12Ends at sunrise. This is the last moment to pray it on time. |
| Dhuhr | 13:30 | 16:02Lasts until Asr begins. On Friday, Jumu‘ah takes its place. |
| Asr | 16:02 · Hanafi 16:43 | 18:37Lasts until sunset, but do not leave it until the sun turns pale. |
| Maghrib | 18:37 | 20:11A short window: lasts until Isha begins. |
| Isha | 20:11 | 00:32 · 06:27Best before the middle of the night (the first time). With a real need, until Fajr (the second). |
On short summer nights, you can pray Isha as soon as it begins and then sleep. If you sleep through Fajr, pray it as soon as you wake up. Some scholars allow joining Maghrib and Isha when waiting for Isha is a real hardship, others do not: ask the imam at your mosque.
New to the prayer?
There are five obligatory prayers each day, and each has a set number of rak‘at: Fajr 2, Dhuhr 4, Asr 4, Maghrib 3 and Isha 4. Before you pray, you make wudu, the ritual washing. Whether you have just taken your shahada, have moved to the Netherlands to study or work, or are starting again from the beginning, these guides start from zero.

Questions about prayer times in the Netherlands
What time do Muslims pray today in the Netherlands?
Muslims pray five times a day, and each prayer has its time by the sun: Fajr at dawn, Dhuhr just after midday, Asr in the afternoon, Maghrib at sunset and Isha once it is dark. Today’s times are at the top, and the table gives them for every city. They move by a minute or two every day and from one city to the next: Enschede is about ten minutes ahead of The Hague. Tap “Use my location” for the exact time where you are. The prayer times explained
Why are the times at my mosque different?
Dutch mosques do not all follow one calendar. Turkish mosques, such as those of the ISN (Islamitische Stichting Nederland) and Milli Görüş, follow Diyanet’s calendar, which this page uses by default. Many mosques run by Moroccan communities use 18° for Fajr and 17° for Isha, often on a Mawaqit screen, or their own table. Some add a few minutes of margin. If your mosque publishes its times, follow them: praying with your community matters more than the exact minute.
Diyanet, 18° / 17° or 15°: which should I use?
All three are used by Muslims in the Netherlands. Diyanet’s calendar is the one Turkish mosques publish; it adds a few minutes of caution to sunrise, Dhuhr, Asr and Maghrib and makes Fajr and Isha gentler in summer. 18° / 17° (Muslim World League) is common in Moroccan mosques and many apps. 15° gives a later Fajr and an earlier Isha. If you pray at a mosque, use what it uses. You can change the method under “Calculation”.
How are Fajr and Isha worked out in summer?
Fajr and Isha are tied to how far the sun is below the horizon, usually 18°. In Amsterdam, from 19 May to 25 Jul, the sun never gets that low: the sky never becomes fully dark. Diyanet’s calendar then uses its own summer rule, and 18° / 17° falls back on a share of the night. That is why Isha in June comes late, after 23:00, and why calendars differ most in those weeks.
Until when can I pray Fajr and Isha?
Fajr lasts until sunrise, not until Dhuhr. Isha is best prayed before the middle of the night, halfway between sunset and Fajr, and when there is real need, right up to Fajr. Dhuhr lasts until Asr, Asr until sunset (without putting it off until the sun turns pale), and Maghrib until Isha. Each city page has a table of today’s windows. What to do if you miss a prayer
Which way is the qibla in the Netherlands?
The qibla, the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca, is south-east from everywhere in the Netherlands: around 126° in Amsterdam, 125° in Rotterdam and 128° in Groningen, measured clockwise from north. Each city page shows the exact angle. Qibla finder How to find the qibla
When is the Friday prayer (Jumu‘ah)?
The Friday prayer takes the place of Dhuhr, but each mosque sets the time of its sermon (khutbah) itself, usually a little after Dhuhr. Some large mosques hold two. Check your mosque’s times. Jumu‘ah explained
When does Ramadan 2027 begin in the Netherlands?
The expected date is Monday 8 February 2027, by the astronomical calendar. It is confirmed the evening before, and Turkish and Moroccan mosques do not always follow the same announcement, so it can differ by a day. Follow the announcement your mosque follows. Your first Ramadan
Gebedstijden, namaz vakitleri: is it the same?
Yes. Gebedstijden is Dutch for prayer times, and namaz vakitleri is Turkish. Salah (or salat) is the Arabic word for the prayer, namaz the Turkish and Persian one. They are all the same five prayers.
How many rak‘at does each prayer have?
Fajr has 2 rak‘at, Dhuhr 4, Asr 4, Maghrib 3 and Isha 4. These are the obligatory prayers. The voluntary (sunnah) prayers come before or after some of them. How many rak‘at each prayer has
