How prayer times are worked out in Japan
The five prayers are tied to the sun. Fajr begins at dawn, when the first light appears above the horizon, and lasts until sunrise. Dhuhr begins just after the sun has passed its highest point. Asr begins when the shadows have grown long. Maghrib begins at sunset, and Isha when the last light has gone from the sky.
Sunrise, Dhuhr, Asr and Maghrib are worked out without debate. For Fajr and Isha you have to decide how many degrees below the horizon the sun must be, and that is where calendars part ways. By default this page uses the calculation of Türkiye’s Directorate of Religious Affairs (Diyanet), which Tokyo Camii publishes: 18° for Fajr and 17° for Isha, with 7 minutes taken off sunrise and 5, 4 and 7 minutes added to Dhuhr, Asr and Maghrib. The Muslim World League method many apps use has the same angles without those minutes. This is the difference in Tokyo today:
| Method | Fajr | Dhuhr | Maghrib | Isha |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Diyanet 18° / 17° (default) | 04:29 | 11:31 | 17:04 | 18:17 |
| MWL 18° / 17° | 04:29 | 11:27 | 16:57 | 18:17 |
| 18° / 18° | 04:29 | 11:26 | 16:56 | 18:22 |
Japan is long from east to west but keeps one clock, so on the same day Dhuhr in Kushiro and in Naha are more than an hour apart. There is no daylight saving time, so around the summer solstice Fajr comes before 2:00 in Sapporo and around 2:30 in Tokyo. For Asr you can choose the standard time (Shafi‘i, Maliki and Hanbali schools) or the later Hanafi time.
Japan has more than a hundred mosques, and many publish their own timetable. If yours does, follow it. What matters most is that you pray, and that you pray with the people around you.
New to the prayer?
There are five obligatory prayers each day, and each has a set number of rak‘at: Fajr 2, Dhuhr 4, Asr 4, Maghrib 3 and Isha 4. Before you pray, you make wudu, the ritual washing. Whether you have just taken your shahada, have moved to Japan to study or work, or are starting again from the beginning, these guides start from zero.

Questions about prayer times in Japan
What time do Muslims pray today in Japan?
Muslims pray five times a day, and each prayer has its time by the sun: Fajr at dawn, Dhuhr just after midday, Asr in the afternoon, Maghrib at sunset and Isha once it is dark. Today’s times are at the top, and the table gives them for every city. Japan keeps one clock from end to end, so the same prayer comes at very different clock times: today Dhuhr is at 11:12 in Kushiro and 12:19 in Naha, more than an hour apart. Tap “Use my location” for the exact time where you are. The prayer times explained
Are these the same times as Tokyo Camii?
Yes, almost to the minute. Tokyo Camii publishes the calculation of Türkiye’s Directorate of Religious Affairs (Diyanet): Fajr with the sun 18° below the horizon, Isha at 17°, and a few minutes of caution (temkin) on sunrise, Dhuhr, Asr and Maghrib. This page uses the same calculation by default, and it matches Diyanet’s own tables for Tokyo, Osaka, Sapporo and Naha within a minute. A mosque a few kilometres away may differ by a minute.
Why do apps and mosques show different times?
Everyone starts from the sun, but not with the same angles or the same minutes of caution. Many apps use the Muslim World League’s 18° / 17°: the same angles as Diyanet, but without the extra minutes, so Maghrib comes a few minutes earlier and sunrise a few minutes later. With 18° / 18°, Isha comes about five minutes later. If your mosque publishes its times, follow them: praying with your community matters more than the exact minute. You can change the method under “Calculation”.
Why are there two Asr times?
Asr begins when shadows have grown: for the Shafi‘i, Maliki and Hanbali schools when an object’s shadow equals its length, for the Hanafi school when it is twice its length. In Japan the Hanafi time is about 35 minutes later in winter and more than an hour later in summer. Many Muslims in Japan from Türkiye, Pakistan and Bangladesh follow the Hanafi school. Both are sound: follow your school or your mosque.
Until when can I pray Fajr and Isha?
Fajr lasts until sunrise. Isha is best prayed before the middle of the night, halfway between sunset and Fajr, and when there is real need, right up to Fajr. Dhuhr lasts until Asr, Asr until sunset (without putting it off until the sun turns yellow), and Maghrib until Isha. What to do if you miss a prayer
Why is Fajr so early in summer?
Japan has no daylight saving time, so around the summer solstice dawn comes very early on the clock. Today Fajr is at 04:22 in Sapporo and 05:15 in Naha; in June it comes before 2:00 in Sapporo and around 2:30 in Tokyo. All of Japan lies south of 45° north, so unlike northern Europe no special rule for light nights is needed: the same angles work all year.
Which way is the qibla in Japan?
The qibla, the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca, is west-north-west from everywhere in Japan: around 293° in Tokyo, 291° in Osaka, 288° in Fukuoka and 293° in Sapporo, measured clockwise from north. Each city page shows the exact angle. Qibla finder How to find the qibla
When is the Friday prayer (Jumu‘ah)?
The Friday prayer takes the place of Dhuhr, but each mosque sets the time of its sermon (khutbah) itself. It is usually at Dhuhr time or a little after; at Tokyo Camii it starts at 12:30. Some busy mosques hold two. Check your mosque’s times. Jumu‘ah explained
When does Ramadan 2027 begin in Japan?
The expected date is Monday 8 February 2027, by the astronomical calendar. It is confirmed the evening before, depending on the sighting of the moon, so it can move by a day. Follow the announcement your mosque follows. Your first Ramadan
How many rak‘at does each prayer have?
Fajr has 2 rak‘at, Dhuhr 4, Asr 4, Maghrib 3 and Isha 4. These are the obligatory prayers, 17 rak‘at a day. The voluntary (sunnah) prayers come before or after some of them. How many rak‘at each prayer has
Can I combine prayers at work or when travelling?
Dhuhr and Asr have long windows, so a lunch or afternoon break is often enough; ask whether a meeting room or quiet corner is free for a few minutes. Whether you may combine Dhuhr with Asr and Maghrib with Isha is a difference between the schools: the Shafi‘i, Maliki and Hanbali schools allow it when travelling, the Hanafi school does not. When in doubt, ask the imam at your mosque. Praying at work or school
