How the fasting times are worked out
The fast lasts from Fajr, when the first light appears in the morning, until Maghrib, just after sunset. Before Fajr you eat sahur, and at Maghrib you break the fast with iftar. After Isha many people pray tarawih, the extra night prayers of Ramadan.
The times follow the calendar that DITIB and IGMG have published together since 1 January 2023, based on the Diyanet calculation and followed by many mosques in Germany. Fajr is at 18° below the horizon and Isha at 16°. Maghrib is 7 minutes after sunset, a safety margin the calendar calls temkin. In this calendar imsak and Fajr are the same time: the moment you stop eating.
In February and March the days grow quickly, and fastest in the north. On the first day the fast is 11 h 24 min in Kiel and 11 h 43 min in Munich; by the last day Kiel has caught up, with 13 h 21 min against 13 h 15 min. Clocks change to summer time on 28 March 2027, after Ramadan, so the whole month is in winter time.
After Ramadan: zakat al-fitr and Eid
Before the Eid prayer, everyone who can afford it gives zakat al-fitr, a small gift of food for each person in the household. It is not the same as zakat on savings, which you can work out with the zakat calculator. Eid al-Fitr is expected on Tuesday 9 March 2027, or a day later if Ramadan runs to 30 days: Eid al-Fitr 2027.

Questions about fasting in Ramadan
When does Ramadan 2027 start in Germany?
By the Umm al-Qura calendar, Monday 8 February 2027 is the first day of fasting. In Germany the mosque associations usually announce it together through the Coordination Council of Muslims (KRM), and some communities follow their own moon sighting. Ramadan lasts 29 or 30 days, and Eid al-Fitr is expected on Tuesday 9 March 2027. Eid al-Fitr 2027
When do I have to stop eating for sahur?
Sahur is the meal before dawn. You can eat and drink right up until Fajr begins. The time in the "Sahur ends" column is the last moment, not the time to start eating. Many people get up half an hour earlier so they have time for a calm meal.
When is iftar in Berlin?
Iftar is at Maghrib, when the sun has set. In Berlin it is at 17:11 on the first day and 18:03 on the last day. It is sunnah to break the fast with a date and water before the Maghrib prayer.
How long is the fast in Germany in Ramadan 2027?
Ramadan falls in February and March, so the fasts are short compared with a summer Ramadan. In Berlin the fast lasts 11 h 30 min on the first day and 13 h 19 min on the last day, about 359 hours over the month.
Why are the times a little different from my mosque?
Mosques and apps use different angles for Fajr and Isha and different margins. These times follow the joint DITIB and IGMG calendar (Diyanet, 18° for Fajr and 16° for Isha). Apps that use 15° put Fajr about 19 minutes later, and some calendars add an imsak 10 minutes before Fajr as a margin. If your mosque publishes a Ramadan calendar, follow it.
Does a shower break the fast?
No. Showering, bathing and swimming do not break the fast, as long as you do not swallow water. Take care when you rinse your mouth and nose. Brushing your teeth is fine too, without swallowing. The checker answers more than 50 everyday questions like these, with where the four schools differ. Does this break my fast?
What is zakat al-fitr, and is it the same as zakat?
Zakat al-fitr is a small gift of food, or its value, that every Muslim who can afford it gives for each person in the household before the Eid prayer, so people in need can celebrate too. Mosques in Germany announce the amount each year: the value of about 2.5 to 3 kilos of a staple food such as rice or flour. It is different from zakat, the yearly 2.5% on savings above the nisab. Who does not have to fast?
Anyone who is ill, travelling, menstruating or bleeding after childbirth should not fast, and pregnant and breastfeeding women may leave it if they worry about themselves or the baby. Children do not fast before puberty. The missed days are made up later in the year. Someone who will never be able to fast, for example because of old age or a lasting illness, gives fidya instead: food for a person in need for each day. Ask your imam if this applies to you.
I am a new Muslim. How do I get ready for my first Ramadan?
Start small: practise getting up for sahur a few days before, and learn the niyyah, the intention to fast. You do not need to know everything on day one. The guide below covers what matters most. Your first Ramadan
