E322: lecithin

Is E322 (lecithin) halal?

Halal

Halal. Lecithin is made from soy, sunflower or rapeseed, and sometimes from egg yolk. All of these are halal.

Halal means there is no forbidden source and no real disagreement among scholars. The rest of the product still has to be halal.

What it is and where it comes from

Lecithin is a natural fat-like substance that helps oil and water mix. Food lecithin is pressed out of soybeans, sunflower seeds or rapeseed, or more rarely taken from egg yolk. No pig or slaughtered animal is involved.

Where you find it

Chocolate, margarine, spreads, biscuits, bread, instant powders, baby formula and cooking sprays.

What to look for on the label

Usually written as "soy lecithin", "sunflower lecithin" or "emulsifier (E322)". Nothing to check for halal.

This is a guide, not a fatwa. Recipes change, so check the label, look for halal certification, and ask your local imam where scholars differ.
