Fish gelatin

Is fish gelatin halal?

Halal

Halal. Fish need no slaughter, so gelatin made from fish is halal in every school.

Halal means there is no forbidden source and no real disagreement among scholars. The rest of the product still has to be halal.

What it is and where it comes from

Fish gelatin is made from the skin and bones of fish such as cod, tilapia or pangasius. Fish are halal without slaughter in all four schools.

Where you find it

Halal and kosher sweets, desserts, capsules and some yoghurts.

What to look for on the label

Look for "fish gelatin" in the ingredients. People with a fish allergy should avoid it.

This is a guide, not a fatwa. Recipes change, so check the label, look for halal certification, and ask your local imam where scholars differ.
