Marshmallows

Is marshmallows halal?

Depends on the source

Depends on the gelatin. Most marshmallows are made with gelatin, very often from pork. Halal marshmallows use beef or fish gelatin from a halal source, and vegan ones use agar or carrageenan.

Depends on the source means it can be made from plants, microbes or minerals, or from animals, including pigs. From plants, microbes or a halal-slaughtered animal it is halal; from pigs it is not. The label often does not say which, so look for a halal logo, a vegan label or a note on the source, or ask the maker.

What it is and where it comes from

Marshmallows are sugar, water and a gelling agent, whipped with air. The gelling agent is usually gelatin. Halal brands use certified beef or fish gelatin; vegan brands use plant gels.

Where you find it

Marshmallows, rocky road, s'mores, hot chocolate toppings, marshmallow fluff and some biscuits and cereals.

What to look for on the label

Look for a halal logo, "beef gelatin (halal)", "fish gelatin" or a vegan label. Plain "gelatin" may be pork.

This is a guide, not a fatwa. Recipes change, so check the label, look for halal certification, and ask your local imam where scholars differ.
