E150a to E150d: caramel colours

Is E150 (caramel colour) halal?

Halal

Halal. Caramel colour is made by heating sugar.

Halal means there is no forbidden source and no real disagreement among scholars. The rest of the product still has to be halal.

What it is and where it comes from

Caramel colours are brown colours made by heating sugars such as glucose or sucrose, sometimes with acids, alkalis, ammonia or sulphites to give different shades (E150a to E150d). There is no animal or alcohol source.

Where you find it

Cola and other soft drinks, gravy, soy sauce, brown bread, sauces, sweets and biscuits.

What to look for on the label

Nothing to check for halal. Whether the drink or food around it is halal is a separate question.

This is a guide, not a fatwa. Recipes change, so check the label, look for halal certification, and ask your local imam where scholars differ.
