E100: curcumin

Is E100 (curcumin) halal?

Halal

Halal. Curcumin is the yellow colour of turmeric root, or a man-made copy of it.

Halal means there is no forbidden source and no real disagreement among scholars. The rest of the product still has to be halal.

What it is and where it comes from

Curcumin is the bright yellow pigment of turmeric, a root from the ginger family. It is extracted from the dried root, or made synthetically. There is no animal or alcohol source.

Where you find it

Mustard, curry sauces, rice dishes, cheese, sweets, drinks and margarine.

What to look for on the label

Nothing to check for halal.

This is a guide, not a fatwa. Recipes change, so check the label, look for halal certification, and ask your local imam where scholars differ.
