What is Eid al-Adha?
Eid al-Adha, the festival of sacrifice, is on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah, during the days of Hajj. It remembers how the Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was ready to sacrifice his son for Allah, and how Allah ransomed him with a ram (Quran 37:102 to 107). It is one of the two Eids of Islam, and the greater of the two.
What to do for Eid al-Adha
- Make the most of the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said there are no days in which good deeds are more beloved to Allah. Pray, give charity and remember Allah often.
- If you will offer a sacrifice, do not cut your hair or nails from the start of Dhul Hijjah until your animal is sacrificed.
- Fast the Day of Arafah, if you are not on Hajj. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said it wipes out the sins of the year before and the year after.
- Say the takbir. “Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, la ilaha illallah, wallahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar wa lillahil-hamd”, often from Fajr on the Day of Arafah until Asr on the last day of Tashreeq, especially after each prayer.
- On the morning of Eid, take a ghusl, wear your best clothes and pray the Eid prayer: two rakat with extra takbirs, then a sermon. On this Eid it is sunnah to eat after the prayer, not before.
- The sacrifice (udhiyah or qurbani). From after the Eid prayer until sunset on the 13th, those who can afford it sacrifice a sheep or goat, or share a cow or camel with up to seven people. Many give it through a charity that does it for them. The meat is shared with family, friends and people in need.
- Celebrate. Say “Eid Mubarak”, visit family, and share food. Do not fast on Eid or the three days of Tashreeq after it.
The date in your country
Each Islamic month begins with the new crescent moon. Saudi Arabia and the countries that follow it announce the date after a sighting on the evening before. Turkey and many Turkish mosques in Europe use a calculated calendar fixed in advance. Many communities in South Asia, and some in Europe and North America, wait for a local sighting, which can come a day later. Follow the announcement of your local mosque.
