What zakat al-fitr is

Ibn ‘Umar said that the Prophet ﷺ made zakat al-fitr a duty, one sa’ of dates or one sa’ of barley, on every Muslim, free or slave, male or female, young or old, and told them to give it before people went out to the prayer (al-Bukhari and Muslim). Ibn ‘Abbas said the Prophet ﷺ made it a purification for the one who fasted from idle and bad talk, and food for the poor (Abu Dawud).

It is also called sadaqat al-fitr, and fitrana in South Asia. It is not the yearly zakat on savings: for that, see the zakat calculator.

How much: one sa’ per person

A sa’ is a measure of volume: four double handfuls. In weight it depends on the food. Common estimates run from about 2 kg to 3 kg: around 2.04 kg of wheat in many modern calculations, 2.5 kg in many mosques, 2.6 kg of rice in Malaysia, about 3 kg of rice in many Saudi fatwas.

  • Food. The Maliki, Shafi’i and Hanbali schools say to give the staple food of your country, such as rice, flour or dates.
  • Money. The Hanafi school allows its value in money. For wheat it counts half a sa’, for dates, barley or raisins a whole one. This is what most mosques in the West collect.

The amounts in the calculator are what recognised bodies published. They change every year, and your mosque may set its own. If it does, type its amount in.

Who pays, and for whom

Every Muslim who has more food than they and their family need for the day and night of Eid, in the Maliki, Shafi’i and Hanbali schools. In the Hanafi school, whoever owns the nisab beyond their basic needs. You pay for yourself and for those you support:

  • Your young children, and a baby born before it falls due
  • Your wife, in most schools. In the Hanafi school a wife with means pays for herself, though her husband may pay for her with her consent
  • In most schools, others you must provide for, such as a poor parent

A baby not yet born is not required. The Hanbali school recommends paying for it too.

When to give it

  • Best: on the morning of Eid, before the prayer. See when Eid al-Fitr 2027 is expected.
  • Early: a day or two before Eid is fine in every school; the Companions did it. The Shafi’i school allows it from the start of Ramadan, and the Hanafi school earlier still. Many mosques collect early so the food reaches families in time.
  • Late: after the Eid prayer it counts as ordinary charity (Abu Dawud), but you still owe it. Pay it as soon as you can.

Who receives it

The poor and the needy, so that nobody has to ask on the day of Eid. Most scholars prefer that it goes to the poor where you live. Your mosque or a zakat body can pass it on for you.

Questions about zakat al-fitr

How much is zakat al-fitr?

One sa’ of staple food per person, or its value in money. For Ramadan 2026 the Fiqh Council of North America set $10, the National Zakat Foundation £7 in the UK, the Australian National Imams Council about AU$20, the Grande Mosquée de Paris 7 €, Islamic Relief Deutschland 13 €, Rabita in Oslo 100 kr, Islamic Relief Sverige 100 kr, MUIS in Singapore S$5 (S$8 for the higher rate) and Lembaga Zakat Selangor RM8, RM16 or RM25 by the rice you eat. The figures for 2027 come out shortly before Ramadan. Your own mosque may set a different amount: follow it.

Can I pay zakat al-fitr in money?

In the Hanafi school, yes: you may give the value of the food. The Maliki, Shafi’i and Hanbali schools say to give the food itself, as the Prophet ﷺ did. Most mosques and charities in the West collect money, and many of them buy food with it for families before Eid. If your mosque collects food, give food.

Do I pay for my baby, or for a baby not yet born?

A baby born before Eid counts like anyone else: before sunset on the last day of Ramadan in most schools, before dawn on the day of Eid in the Hanafi school. A baby still in the womb is not required. The Hanbali school recommends paying for it, following ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan.

I became Muslim during Ramadan. Do I pay?

Yes, if you were Muslim before the time it falls due: sunset on the last day of Ramadan in most schools, dawn on the day of Eid in the Hanafi school. It is due even if you did not fast the whole month. If you are not sure, ask your local imam. New to Islam? Start here

I forgot to pay before the Eid prayer. What now?

Pay it as soon as you can. The hadith says that given after the prayer it counts as ordinary charity, so the reward is less, but the four schools agree that it stays owed and does not drop away.

Is zakat al-fitr the same as zakat?

No. Zakat al-fitr is a small fixed amount per person at the end of Ramadan, paid by almost every Muslim. Zakat on wealth (zakat al-mal) is 2.5% of savings that stay above the nisab for a lunar year, paid only by those who have that much. Zakat calculator

Can I give it to a relative?

Not to people you already have to support, such as your parents, your children or your wife. A poor relative you do not have to support, such as a brother, a sister or an aunt, may receive it, and many scholars say it is even better.

Is anything I type here saved or sent?

No. The calculator runs in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere or stored.
