Your fidya
$0
0 days × $15: one poor person fed for each day.
Kaffarah, if you have to feed 60 people
$900
60 × $15. Only for a Ramadan fast broken on purpose, and only when you cannot fast 60 days in a row. See below.
Make up, fidya or kaffarah?
- Make it up (qada). A day missed for a reason that passes: travel, an illness you recover from, a period, the bleeding after birth, and in most cases pregnancy or breastfeeding. Fast one day for each day, before the next Ramadan if you can. No payment.
- Fidya. You cannot fast and will not be able to later: old age, or a lasting illness with no hope of recovery. Feed one poor person for each day, as the Quran says (2:184).
- Kaffarah. A Ramadan fast broken on purpose by intercourse, in all four schools. In the Hanafi and Maliki schools also by eating or drinking on purpose. You make up the day and pay the kaffarah.
How fidya works
The amount is food for one poor person per day. The Shafi’i and Maliki schools count one mudd of staple food (a quarter of a sa’, roughly 0.6 kg). The Hanafi school counts half a sa’ of wheat, the same as zakat al-fitr. The Hanbali school counts a mudd of wheat or half a sa’ of other food. Many bodies today set the price of one meal instead, which is what the calculator uses.
You can give it day by day, or all at the end of the month: Anas ibn Malik, when he grew too old to fast, fed thirty poor people at once. Most scholars say not before Ramadan has begun. If, against all hope, you recover later, many scholars, the Hanafi school among them, say you then make the days up.
If you make up fasts late
If you delay making up a fast until the next Ramadan without a reason, the Maliki, Shafi’i and Hanbali schools say you make it up and also pay one fidya for each day. The Hanafi school says you only make it up. The relied-on Shafi’i view adds a fidya for every year of delay; MUIS in Singapore stopped requiring that in 2026.
Kaffarah: 60 days or 60 poor people
- Free a slave. Not possible today.
- Fast 60 days in a row. A break without a valid reason means starting again.
- Feed 60 poor people, if you truly cannot fast. This is the figure under the fidya in the calculator: 60 times the amount per day.
Most scholars take these in order. The Maliki school lets you choose, and prefers feeding. Kaffarah is only for a Ramadan fast broken on purpose. It is not for eating or drinking by mistake or because you forgot, for a day you missed with a valid reason, or for a make up or voluntary fast. Not sure what breaks the fast? These are the mainstream positions of the four Sunni schools, to learn from. For your own case, ask your local imam. To plan next year’s fasts, see Ramadan 2027.
Questions about fidya and kaffarah
How much is fidya?
The cost of feeding one poor person for each day. For 2026 the Fiqh Council of North America set $15, the National Zakat Foundation £7 in the UK, Islamic Relief Canada CA$15, NZF Australia AU$20, the Grande Mosquée de Paris 7 €, Islamic Relief Deutschland 13 €, Islamic Relief Sverige 75 kr, MUIS in Singapore S$4 and PPZ-MAIWP in Kuala Lumpur RM4. Your own mosque may set a different amount: follow it.
What is the difference between fidya and kaffarah?
Fidya is for a fast you could not keep and can never make up, because of old age or a lasting illness: one poor person fed per day. Kaffarah is the penalty for breaking a Ramadan fast on purpose: you make up the day, then fast 60 days in a row, or if you cannot, feed 60 poor people.
Can I pay fidya instead of making up my fasts?
Not if you will be able to fast later. Days missed for travel, an illness you recover from, a period or the bleeding after birth are made up by fasting one day for each day. Fidya is only for someone who cannot fast now and will not be able to later.
I missed fasts because I was pregnant or breastfeeding. Do I pay fidya?
You make the days up in every school. The Hanafi school stops there. The Shafi’i and Hanbali schools add a fidya for each day if you fasted out of fear only for the baby. The Maliki school adds it for a breastfeeding mother, not a pregnant one. Some scholars, following Ibn ‘Abbas, say fidya alone is enough. Ask your local imam which applies to you.
Do I owe one kaffarah for each day I broke?
In the Maliki, Shafi’i and Hanbali schools, yes: one for each day. In the Hanafi school, several days broken in the same Ramadan need one kaffarah, as long as you did not pay one in between.
Can I pay fidya in money?
The Hanafi school allows the value of the food. The other schools say to give the food itself. Most mosques and charities that collect fidya in money buy meals or food with it.
I have diabetes. Should I fast or pay fidya?
It depends on how serious it is and on your treatment. Ask your doctor whether fasting is safe for you, then ask your local imam. If you cannot fast now but could later, you make the days up instead of paying fidya. Does an injection or insulin break the fast?
