Day one was a clean page

When ‘Amr ibn al-‘As became Muslim, the Prophet (peace be upon him) told him: “Do you not know that Islam wipes out what came before it?” (Sahih Muslim 121). Your count starts on the day of your shahada. Nothing from before it is held against you, and nothing from before it is owed. Every day on this counter is a day you lived as a Muslim.

Your firsts

  • Your first Friday. Jumu’ah, the Friday prayer, replaces Dhuhr in congregation: “When the call is made for the prayer on Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah” (Quran 62:9). It is required of adult men who are not travelling. Women may attend, but it is not required of them (Abu Dawud 1067), and the scholars agree on this. See how Jumu’ah is prayed.
  • Your first Ramadan. The month of fasting (Quran 2:183 to 185). If your shahada fell inside Ramadan, that Ramadan was your first, from the day you became Muslim. You fast from that day; the days before it are not owed.
  • Your first Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. The two festivals of Islam. Dates are from the Islamic calendar.

From shahada to first prayer

Some reverts pray on the day of their shahada. Others need weeks or months to learn the words, the movements and wudu. Both are normal. Allah says: “Allah does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear” (Quran 2:286).

Questions about your shahada anniversary

How long have I been Muslim?

Pick the day of your shahada above. The counter shows the days and weeks since then, counted on your own calendar, with leap years and clock changes taken care of. If you do not remember the exact day, the closest day you remember is fine.

What is my shahada date in the Hijri calendar?

The counter converts it with the Umm al-Qura calendar, the one Saudi Arabia uses. Your local mosque may follow moon sighting, which can differ by a day. A Hijri day begins at sunset, so if you took your shahada after Maghrib, your Hijri date is the next one.

Is it allowed to celebrate my shahada anniversary?

There is no special prayer, fast or ritual for it in the Quran or the Sunnah. Scholars differ on marking a yearly date. Some advise against making any day a yearly celebration, because the Prophet (peace be upon him) gave Muslims two festivals, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha (Abu Dawud 1134). Many others see no harm in remembering the day, thanking Allah and making dua, as long as it is not treated as a religious festival. Ask your local imam if you are unsure.

Which anniversary is the right one, Hijri or Gregorian?

Neither is required. The Islamic calendar is the Hijri one, so some reverts like to keep that date, about 11 days earlier every year. Others keep the date on their usual calendar. Both are shown.

Do 40 days or 100 days mean something in Islam?

No. There is no ruling attached to day 40 or day 100 after a shahada. They are just good moments to look back at how far you have come. The firsts that are real Islamic days are Friday, Ramadan and the two Eids.

I took my shahada a while ago and I still do not pray. Is it too late?

No. It is never too late, and there is no deadline. Every revert learns at their own pace. Start with one step today. Our first prayer checklist breaks it into small steps, and pray along walks you through the prayer with audio. First prayer checklist Pray along

Do I owe prayers from before my shahada?

No. Islam wipes out what came before it (Sahih Muslim 121), and the scholars agree that a revert owes no prayers or fasts from before the shahada. The missed prayers calculator can count from your shahada if you want to check the time since. Missed prayers calculator

Is the date I type saved or sent?

No. The counter works in your browser. The dates you type are not sent anywhere and are gone when you close the page.
