How many times will you say Allahu akbar?

Allahu akbar means “Allah is greater”. You say it 94 times a day in the five prayers, and it adds up to a number you will not forget. Put in your age and see how many are still ahead of you.

Maghrib3 rakat17
Isha4 rakat22
A day94

An estimate for reflection, counted the common way. Time in prayer assumes about a minute a rakat. Nothing you type is sent or stored.

Why 94 a day

Every prayer starts with one Allahu akbar, the opening takbir. Then each rakat has five more:

  1. Going down to ruku
  2. Going down to the first sujud
  3. Rising from the first sujud
  4. Going down to the second sujud
  5. Rising from the second sujud, to stand or to sit

Rising from ruku is not one of them: there you say “Sami’Allahu liman hamidah”. In a prayer of 3 or 4 rakat you say one more when you stand up after the first tashahhud. So:

  • Fajr, 2 rakat: 1 + 10 = 11
  • Dhuhr, 4 rakat: 1 + 20 + 1 = 22
  • Asr, 4 rakat: 22
  • Maghrib, 3 rakat: 1 + 15 + 1 = 17
  • Isha, 4 rakat: 22

Together: 11 + 22 + 22 + 17 + 22 = 94. The count is in the hadith. ‘Ikrimah prayed behind an old man in Makkah who said Allahu akbar 22 times in the prayer. He told Ibn ‘Abbas the man must be foolish, and Ibn ‘Abbas answered: “This is the sunnah of Abul-Qasim”, the Prophet ﷺ (Sahih al-Bukhari 788). Abu Hurairah described it step by step: the Prophet ﷺ said Allahu akbar when he began, when he bowed, when he went down to prostrate and when he raised his head, in the whole prayer, and when he stood up after the sitting of the second rakat (al-Bukhari 789, Muslim 392).

Sunnah prayers, Witr and the dhikr after prayer

The same rule counts every prayer: 2 rakat is 11, 3 rakat is 17, 4 rakat is 22.

  • The 12 sunnah rakat (Muslim 728; listed in Tirmidhi 415): 2 before Fajr, 4 before Dhuhr, 2 after Dhuhr, 2 after Maghrib, 2 after Isha. That is 66 a day. Prayed as 2 + 2 or as one prayer of 4, the 4 before Dhuhr has 22 either way. More in the sunnah prayers.
  • Witr: 1 rakat has 6. 3 rakat, as 2 then 1 or with a middle sitting, has 17. The Hanafi Witr adds a takbir before the qunut in the third rakat: 18. With one sitting at the end only, 16.
  • After each fard prayer: Allahu akbar 33 times (al-Bukhari 843, Muslim 597) or 34 times (Muslim 596). Five prayers make 165 or 170 more a day. See the dhikr after prayer, or count it with the tasbih counter.

Where scholars differ

The count above is the common one, and the four schools agree on where the takbirs are said. They differ on smaller points. The opening takbir is a pillar of the prayer in every school. The others, the takbirs of movement, are sunnah for the Hanafi, Maliki and Shafi’i schools and wajib for the Hanbali school. Maliki scholars say the takbir after the first tashahhud once you are fully standing; the count does not change.

The calculator leaves out what changes from week to week: Jumu’ah on Friday (2 rakat, 11 takbirs, in place of Dhuhr for men), shortened prayers when travelling, the extra takbirs of the Eid prayers and the prostration of forgetfulness. That is why the result says “about”.

The numbers behind the estimates

  • Length of life. The default is the world average life expectancy at birth from the WHO Global Health Observatory for 2023: 70.6 years for men and 76.1 for women, rounded to 71 and 76. Someone who is already an adult can on average expect a little more. Only Allah knows the length of a life, so change it as you like.
  • Periods. No prayer is prayed or made up during menstruation (hayd) or the bleeding after birth (nifas). The calculator fills in 6 days a month, the same as our missed prayers calculator; a normal period lasts 2 to 7 days (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, ACOG). It counts them from age 12, since the median age of a first period is 12 to 13, to age 51, the average age of menopause (both ACOG).
  • After birth. Nifas lasts at most 40 days in the Hanafi and Hanbali schools and 60 in the Maliki and Shafi’i schools. When the bleeding stops sooner, a woman takes a ghusl and prays again, so 40 is an upper estimate.
  • Became Muslim later? Put the age of your shahada as the age you started. Nothing before it is owed. If you missed prayers after it, the missed prayers calculator counts them.

Questions about Allahu akbar in prayer

How many times do you say Allahu akbar in each prayer?

Fajr 11, Dhuhr 22, Asr 22, Maghrib 17 and Isha 22. A prayer of 2 rakat has 11, of 3 rakat 17, of 4 rakat 22. That is the opening takbir, 5 in every rakat, and 1 more when you stand up after the first tashahhud. How many rakat each prayer has

How many Allahu akbar are in the 5 daily prayers?

94 a day in the fard prayers alone. With the dhikr after each prayer it becomes 259 (33 each time) or 264 (34 each time). With the 12 sunnah rakat add 66, with Witr add 17 (18 in the Hanafi way).

Why 5 takbirs in every rakat and not 6?

Because rising from ruku has its own words: "Sami’Allahu liman hamidah", not Allahu akbar. The five are: going down to ruku, going down to the first sujud, rising from it, going down to the second sujud, and rising from it.

What is the proof for 22 in a four rakat prayer?

‘Ikrimah prayed behind an old man in Makkah who said Allahu akbar 22 times, and thought it was strange. Ibn ‘Abbas told him: "This is the sunnah of Abul-Qasim," meaning the Prophet ﷺ (Sahih al-Bukhari 788). Abu Hurairah described the same takbirs at every movement (al-Bukhari 789, Muslim 392).

How many takbir are in a 2 rakat sunnah prayer, and in Witr?

A 2 rakat prayer has 11, like Fajr. Witr of 1 rakat has 6. Witr of 3 rakat has 17, prayed as 2 then 1, or with a sitting after the second rakat. Hanafis say one more takbir before the qunut in the third rakat, so 18. Prayed as 3 rakat with only one sitting at the end, as the Shafi’i and Hanbali schools also allow, it is 16.

After prayer, is it 33 or 34 times Allahu akbar?

Both are in the sunnah. In al-Bukhari 843 and Muslim 597 it is 33 each of SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah and Allahu akbar; Muslim 597 then completes 100 with La ilaha illAllah. In Muslim 596, from Ka’b ibn ‘Ujrah, Allahu akbar is said 34 times. Use either. Tasbih counter for the dhikr after prayer

Do women say fewer takbirs because of their period?

A woman does not pray during her period or the bleeding after birth, and she does not make those prayers up. Scholars agree on this. So the count leaves those days out. It is not a loss: she is following what Allah asked of her in those days. Prayer and your period

What about Friday, travel and Eid?

They change the count a little, and the calculator leaves them out. Men pray Jumu’ah, 2 rakat, in place of Dhuhr on Friday: 11 instead of 22. A traveller shortens the 4 rakat prayers to 2. The Eid prayers have extra takbirs at the start of each rakat. The prostration of forgetfulness adds four.
