Beer batter (beer-battered fish and chips)

Is beer batter halal?

Not halal

Not halal. Beer is an alcoholic drink, and it may not be used as an ingredient. Frying briefly does not remove all the alcohol.

Not halal means the four Sunni schools and the halal certifiers treat it as forbidden. Where a minority view exists, it is named below.

What it is and where it comes from

Beer batter is made by mixing flour with beer. The fish or chips are fried for only a few minutes, so some alcohol stays. Scholars of the four schools hold that what is forbidden to drink may not be added to food.

Where you find it

Beer-battered fish, chips, onion rings and some frozen products. Some beer breads too.

What to look for on the label

Look for beer, ale or lager in the batter. In fish and chip shops, ask: many use plain batter or sparkling water instead.

This is a guide, not a fatwa. Recipes change, so check the label, look for halal certification, and ask your local imam where scholars differ.
