E440: pectin

Is E440 (pectin) halal?

Halal

Halal. Pectin is made from apple and citrus peel.

Halal means there is no forbidden source and no real disagreement among scholars. The rest of the product still has to be halal.

What it is and where it comes from

Pectin is a natural fibre from fruit, mostly taken from apple leftovers and citrus peel. It makes jam set.

Where you find it

Jam, marmalade, fruit sweets, jelly, yoghurt and fruit drinks.

What to look for on the label

Nothing to check for halal. Fruit gums made with pectin instead of gelatin are a good choice.

This is a guide, not a fatwa. Recipes change, so check the label, look for halal certification, and ask your local imam where scholars differ.
