E901: beeswax

Is E901 (beeswax) halal?

Halal

Halal. Beeswax comes from honeycomb, like honey.

Halal means there is no forbidden source and no real disagreement among scholars. The rest of the product still has to be halal.

What it is and where it comes from

Beeswax is the wax bees use to build their honeycomb. It is melted and cleaned after the honey is taken. Like honey, it is halal.

Where you find it

Glazing on sweets, jelly beans and dried fruit, coatings on apples and citrus, cheese coatings, and chewing gum.

What to look for on the label

Nothing to check for halal.

This is a guide, not a fatwa. Recipes change, so check the label, look for halal certification, and ask your local imam where scholars differ.
