Taurine

Is taurine halal?

Halal

Halal. The taurine in energy drinks and food is made synthetically, not from animals.

Halal means there is no forbidden source and no real disagreement among scholars. The rest of the product still has to be halal.

What it is and where it comes from

Taurine is an amino acid found in meat, fish and the human body. It was first found in ox bile, which is where the name comes from, but the taurine added to drinks and food today is made chemically.

Where you find it

Energy drinks, baby formula, supplements and pet food.

What to look for on the label

Nothing to check for halal. Energy drinks can still contain other questions, such as colours or flavourings.

This is a guide, not a fatwa. Recipes change, so check the label, look for halal certification, and ask your local imam where scholars differ.
