2:185 Al-Baqarah
شهر رمضان الذي أنزل فيه القرآن هدى للناس وبينات من الهدى والفرقان فمن شهد منكم الشهر فليصمه ومن كان مريضا أو على سفر فعدة من أيام أخر يريد الله بكم اليسر ولا يريد بكم العسر ولتكملوا العدة ولتكبروا الله على ما هداكم ولعلكم تشكرون
The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for mankind, and clear proofs of the guidance, and the Criterion (of right and wrong). And whosoever of you is present, let him fast the month, and whosoever of you is sick or on a journey, (let him fast the same) number of other days. Allah desireth for you ease; He desireth not hardship for you; and (He desireth) that ye should complete the period, and that ye should magnify Allah for having guided you, and that peradventure ye may be thankful.
How this was counted
The Arabic count goes through all 6,236 verses of the Tanzil text without vowel marks and counts each written word that is one of the forms named above. Wa (and), fa (so), bi (with), li (for), ka (like) and al (the) are written joined to the next word, so they are allowed in front. The basmala at the top of each surah is not counted; the one that is verse 1 of Al-Fatiha is.
The English count looks for whole words in Pickthall‘s translation. Words he put in brackets are his explanations, not the Arabic, so they are left out. A translation count is a count of the translator‘s choices: use the Arabic number when you quote one.

Questions about Ramadan in the Quran
How many times is Ramadan mentioned in the Quran?
In the Arabic, 1 time, in 1 verse. Counted: The word Ramadan (رمضان). The fasting of the month is also in "the month" (ash-shahr) in 2:185 and in the fasting verses 2:183 to 2:187. In Pickthall's English translation the count is 1 time.
Why do other sources give a different number?
Because they count other forms of the word, or count in a translation. Arabic joins words such as "and" and "the" to the next word and adds endings for his, their and plurals, and translators use different English words for the same Arabic word. Every number is right for its own rule; this page tells you its rule and lists every verse, so you can check it.
Where is Ramadan first mentioned in the Quran?
In mushaf order, the first verse is 2:185. The full list is on this page, each verse in Arabic and in English.
