What is Eid al-Fitr?
Eid al-Fitr, the festival of breaking the fast, is the first day of Shawwal, the month after Ramadan. It is one of the two Eids of Islam. Muslims thank Allah for the month of fasting with a special prayer in the morning, and spend the day with family and friends. Fasting on the day of Eid is not allowed.
What to do on Eid al-Fitr
- Give Zakat al-Fitr before the Eid prayer. It is due for yourself and for each person you provide for. It is a measure of staple food per person, and many mosques collect a fixed amount of money and give it on your behalf. Many give it a day or two before Eid.
- Say the takbir. From sunset on the night of Eid until the prayer: “Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, la ilaha illallah, wallahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar wa lillahil-hamd” (Allah is the Greatest, there is no god but Allah, and to Allah belongs all praise).
- Take a ghusl and wear your best clothes. Read how to do ghusl.
- Eat something before you go. The Prophet (peace be upon him) ate a few dates, an odd number, before going out on this Eid.
- Pray the Eid prayer. It is two rakat in the morning, with extra takbirs at the start of each rakat, followed by a sermon. There is no adhan or iqamah. If you do not know the extra takbirs, simply follow the imam.
- Greet people. Say “Eid Mubarak” (blessed Eid) or “Taqabbal Allahu minna wa minkum” (may Allah accept from us and from you).
- Celebrate. Visit family, share food and gifts, and remember people who are alone. It is sunnah to go home from the prayer by a different way than you came.
After Eid, many Muslims fast six days of Shawwal. It is sunnah, not obligatory, and the days do not have to be in a row.
The date in your country
Each Islamic month begins with the new crescent moon. Saudi Arabia and the countries that follow it announce the date after a sighting on the evening before. Turkey and many Turkish mosques in Europe use a calculated calendar fixed in advance. Many communities in South Asia, and some in Europe and North America, wait for a local sighting, which can come a day later. Follow the announcement of your local mosque.
