What is Ramadan?
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, the month in which the Quran was first revealed (Quran 2:185). Fasting it is one of the five pillars of Islam. For a whole month, Muslims fast from dawn (Fajr) to sunset (Maghrib), and spend more time in prayer, Quran and charity.
What Muslims do in Ramadan
- Suhoor: a meal before Fajr. There is blessing in it, and it makes the day easier.
- The fast: from Fajr to Maghrib, no food, drink or smoking, and also no arguing or bad speech.
- Iftar: at Maghrib, break the fast with dates and water, pray Maghrib, then eat.
- Taraweeh: a sunnah night prayer after Isha, often in the mosque. It is not obligatory.
- The last ten nights: Muslims seek Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Decree, in the odd nights. The Quran says it is better than a thousand months (97:3).
- Zakat al-Fitr: a small charity for each person in the family, given before the Eid prayer.
Your first Ramadan
If this is your first Ramadan, you do not have to do everything. Start with the fast and the five daily prayers, and add the rest bit by bit. Read your first Ramadan as a revert, and if you are unsure about something, check does this break my fast?
Ramadan 2028 is 29 days by the Umm al-Qura calendar, but the month can have 29 or 30 days, depending on the moon at its end. In Norway, see the Ramadan timetable for Norway with suhoor and iftar times for every town.
The date in your country
Each Islamic month begins with the new crescent moon. Saudi Arabia and the countries that follow it announce the date after a sighting on the evening before. Turkey and many Turkish mosques in Europe use a calculated calendar fixed in advance. Many communities in South Asia, and some in Europe and North America, wait for a local sighting, which can come a day later. Follow the announcement of your local mosque.

Nobody knows the night for certain, so seek it in all of them.
Do I have to fast in my first Ramadan as a new Muslim?
Yes, if you are an adult, healthy and not travelling, the fast is obligatory from your first Ramadan. It is normal to find it hard. Travellers, people who are ill, and women during their period do not fast, and make up the days later.
What breaks the fast?
Eating, drinking and smoking on purpose, and intimacy, between Fajr and Maghrib. Eating or drinking by mistake, out of habit, does not break it: stop and carry on with your fast.
