E1422: acetylated distarch adipate (modified starch)

Is E1422 (modified starch) halal?

Halal

Halal. Modified starches are made from corn, potato, wheat or tapioca starch.

Halal means there is no forbidden source and no real disagreement among scholars. The rest of the product still has to be halal.

What it is and where it comes from

E1422 is plant starch that has been treated so it thickens better and holds up to heat, freezing and acid. The other modified starches (E1404 to E1452) are the same idea. No animal or alcohol source is used.

Where you find it

Yoghurt, desserts, sauces, soups, ready meals, pie fillings and dressings.

What to look for on the label

Nothing to check for halal.

This is a guide, not a fatwa. Recipes change, so check the label, look for halal certification, and ask your local imam where scholars differ.
