E162: beetroot red (betanin)

Is E162 (beetroot red) halal?

Halal

Halal. Beetroot red is made from beetroot juice.

Halal means there is no forbidden source and no real disagreement among scholars. The rest of the product still has to be halal.

What it is and where it comes from

E162 is the red colour pressed out of beetroot. It is a common plant-based alternative to carmine (E120).

Where you find it

Ice cream, yoghurt, sweets, jelly, sauces, soups and pink icing.

What to look for on the label

Nothing to check for halal.

This is a guide, not a fatwa. Recipes change, so check the label, look for halal certification, and ask your local imam where scholars differ.
