E414: gum arabic (acacia gum)

Is E414 (gum arabic) halal?

Halal

Halal. Gum arabic is the dried sap of acacia trees.

Halal means there is no forbidden source and no real disagreement among scholars. The rest of the product still has to be halal.

What it is and where it comes from

Gum arabic is the hardened sap of acacia trees, mostly from Sudan and the Sahel. It thickens, stabilises and coats.

Where you find it

Soft drinks, sweets, chewing gum, icing, and coatings on nuts and pills.

What to look for on the label

Nothing to check for halal.

This is a guide, not a fatwa. Recipes change, so check the label, look for halal certification, and ask your local imam where scholars differ.
