What it is and when you say it

Al-Falaq, "The Daybreak", is surah 113. With An-Nas it is one of the two surahs of seeking refuge (al-mu'awwidhatayn): you ask Allah to protect you from harm you can see and harm you cannot.

You can recite it after Al-Fatiha in prayer. The Prophet (peace be upon him) also recited it with Al-Ikhlas and An-Nas before sleeping and after each prayer.

How to learn it by heart

  1. Read the whole text once with its meaning, so you know what you are saying.
  2. Learn one line at a time. Say it out loud until it flows, then add the next line.
  3. Hide the words little by little: first letters, then nothing. Tap a line when you need a look.
  4. Use it in your prayers right away. Repeating it five times a day is what makes it stay.

Common questions

When do people recite Al-Falaq?

In prayer like any surah, after each obligatory prayer, three times in the morning and evening with Al-Ikhlas and An-Nas, and before sleeping.

What are "those who blow on knots"?

It refers to people who practise witchcraft. The surah asks Allah to protect you from their harm.
